"A federal judge has requested protection for wolves be restored across much of the U.S.",the article said across the Midwest and much of the west,I don't know it if this is going to pertain to you western guys with wolf seasons now,the article was vague on that, this just came out.

How does a judge have the authority to do something like that. They can only interpret and enforce laws not make them.

Nevermind I see that the judge just requested. They can request anything they want I guess. If they don't have law to back it up their request has no more weight than my request.

OK,this ruling affects the Great Lakes area and "portions" of the west,it doesn't say what "portions". It does say it doesn't affect the northern Rocky Mountain states, but it is being reviewed. This came from a judge in California

They know that if you have wolf's you don't need hunters.

Of course. A black cape on the other side of the country surely knows what's best for great lakes wolves. Michigan still hasn't held a season since they were delisted.

Just as ridiculous. These decisions have nothing to do with management, all about feelings.

Well they already have feral hogs destroying crops and fruit trees, Nutria destroying the marsh land and coastline, Beavers flooding timber and residences, Coyotes dragging off small children and pets. and Rat infestations in most metropolitan areas. Might as well have plenty of Wolves to eat livestock endangered species and grown ups. Heck they have a brown bear on their flag might as well let them overpopulate too to clean up what's left.

The ruling was indirectly aimed at Wisconsin,I think, because of last years hunt. But there's been a lot of noise being made about a season here in the U.P. of Michigan.I think the antis got pro active and put a stake in it before it went any farther

There's still a lot of talk over it,over representatives are taking it to Lansing. But between the Governor and her pit bull Attorney General, who have already voiced their anti wolf hunt opinions,a weak DNR who has no stomach for a political fight over these issues, and now this.I can't believe there's still people who think wildlife is scientifically managed.

I knew it would be a fight with twitmer and cronies. Our dnr was never great, much worse after becoming the nrc a few years back. Just another political entity. Very true, wildlife hasn't been scientifically managed in a long time.

The DNR biologist 15 or so years ago was a friend's brother. I saw pictures of the tracks and habitat he was studying cougars in. According to the DNR we didn't have any here.

Judge Restores Protections for Gray Wolves Across Much of US
February 10, 2022 AP
BILLINGS, Mont (AP) — A judge restored federal protections for gray wolves across much of the U.S. on Thursday, after their removal in the waning days of the Trump administration exposed the predators to hunting that critics said would undermine their rebound from widespread extermination early last century.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White in Oakland, California, said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service had failed to show wolf populations could be sustained in the Midwest and portions of the West without protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Wildlife advocates had sued the agency last year. The ruling does not directly impact wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming and portions of several adjacent states. Those animals remain under state jurisdiction after federal protections in that region were lifted by Congress last decade.

Attorneys for the Biden administration had defended the Trump rule that removed protections, arguing wolves were resilient enough to bounce back even if their numbers dropped sharply due to intensive hunting.

LOCAL TRENDING NEWS

At stake is the future of a species whose recovery from near-extinction has been heralded as a historic conservation success. That recovery has brought bitter blowback from hunters and farmers angered over wolf attacks on big game herds and livestock. They contend protections are no longer warranted.

Interior Department spokesperson Melissa Schwartz said the agency was reviewing Thursday’s decision and offered no further comment.

Wildlife advocacy groups said the judge’s order would most immediately put a stop to hunting in the Great Lakes region, where Wisconsin officials had come under criticism after a wolf hunt last year blew past the state’s quotas, killing 218 wolves in four days.

“Wolves in the Great Lakes region have a stay of execution,” said John Horning with the environmental group WildEarth Guardians.
