The brand means they are an insider, part of the crew, not just an employee. Great show, enjoy watching it, but not to be taken as reality. Enjoy!

Now have watched the first eight shows. I have a hearing problem and the characters are not normally facing the camera, so I miss a lot of the sub plot. Wife helps me out.

Have you tried closed captioning? Drifter couldn't watch anything without it.

The branding is something that signifies permanence. A membership you cant quit it, get removed, or walk away from. In the yellowstone context it is becoming part of the ranch- permanently. It is why Lloyd pays Jimmy's entry fee at a rodeo. It is a symbol of solidarity.

It is far more common that some would realize. If you notice details, you will see lots of African American athletes with a keloid scars in the greek letter Omega. Sigma is common as well. In the mid 80's Marine Corps Snipers had a similar tradition. In my experience it was voluntary, but I have heard some got it against their will. The symbol most commonly used has a negative message to many- but in the scout-sniper world the meaning is different.

A symbol has meaning to a certain group- while a word tattooed can be read and interpreted, the symbol means nothing to most, but everything to a few.

In Yellowstone...

A branded man can only leave the ranch one way... Train Station.

An unbranded man isn't allowed to fight with a branded man.

Some are branded when they get out of prison, or are thrust onto the ranch ie Rip. Some are branded after proving themself. Ie. Teeter...

Unbranded hands are generally looking for day work or maybe seasonal.

Branding means you are to be loyal to the ranch. You can never tell what happens on the ranch.

Purchased the first three years of this series on DVD at Wally World.
We usually watch old TV shows and detective series on DVD before bed every night.
This has been a positive change of pace from the old 60's and 70's Mannix, Perry Mason, Cannon, and the Rockford Files.
The wife loves this show as much as I do.
Yes, the language and certain scenes are definitely for mature folks.
But, have you listened to everyday conversations spoken today on the streets.
The show divulges information you want to know little by little, you just have to listen and pay attention to what is going on.
Overall I really enjoy this series, looking forward to the next DVD for season four.

And they were not happy when they found out Kayce went against that rule.... But ranchers son kinda superseded the whole getting even with him.

Jimmy has been given a lot of leeway in his dealings. It will be interesting to see how that storyline plays out.
