I know of one caught in my area a couple years ago. I'm glad you let it go, although like quail, it probably doesn't make much difference in the grand scheme of things.

First one I caught here was at Pomona lake. Lake had dropped and then froze. An old beaver bank den was exposed. Was coon tracks going in and out. So I tossed in a skint muskrat and put a 220 in front. Nothing happened for a couple days so I dipped a twig in some of O Gormans Missouri Breaks lure and tossed that in. Next day I had that grey. Got a few more locations around here they show up time to time.

I like catching them. Catch more when I'm out of state though. A lot more. Get several every trip. Haven't came up with one here in 4-5 years . My last one here in KS was a roadkill I picked up south of Garnett. No clue why they are not valuable. I think there fur gorgeous. Trim on a sheared lamb jacket for example.
