Hey guys I'm sure many of yall wear cowboy hats like me and I have a question for yall. So I'm looking into a vintage hat that says "beaver 35". Now one could assume that it's a 35x beaver felt hat. But iv also heard back in the day hat companies like stetson for example used the x system as a rough pricing tool. And in the hat in question it still has the old price sticker on the band and it 35 bucks. But do yall think it's a 35x beaver or just there for pricing. Thanks guys let me know if you have an older hat like this or have any experience with one!

No expert but it is/was my understanding the number of x's indicates the amount of beaver felt in the total felt mix, my oldest Stetson is a 10x it's about 25 yrs. old and was about 200.00 then in Helena, Mt. but recently I've been told different by a hat repair outfit in New Mexico. Now I'm confused also. I hope someone with the correct knowledge chimes in. My current City hat is a 20x cost was just a little more than original hat about 10 yrs. ago. Saw some on Stetsons web site 100x to me that would be pure beaver, but I think the numbers go higher. I'm lost now. Sorry I can't be more help, wait n see I guess. Case

Thsts what I always thought too but I have a Charlie 1 horse that just says 7x fur felt. Don't even say beaver or whatever. But I seen back in the day they only wemt up to 10x. That a 10x stetson was pure beaver. But today they have a 1000x stetson! It's wild. But I would imagine it's a 35x beaver quality. Thanks for chiming in!

According to Stetson, the 'x' not only is the amount of beaver, but also the quality of the beaver fur in the felt. 100X is 50 percent beaver,, 200X is is total beaver, no rabbit or whatever mixed in. Hight x numbers than 200 indicate better quality, as in softer, etc. fur used in the felt. Good information.Thanks.I do like my cowboy hat.

In my opinion my best hat, comfort, fit, ability to work in happens to be a Seritilly (sp) stays on in all but high wind, shades eyes and neck, let's air in keeps sun off thinning scalp. It's a 10x the one I want to send off for deep clean n reblock. Been stepped on and chewed on by cows, sweat stained to high heaven, wife is ashamed to be seen with me in it. But it's my hat. Don't go out without it. Wife calls it my Jethro hat.

I have a 30X Stetson hat given to me as a gift that I've never worn.......as it is 2 sizes too small (7 3/8). How is the best way to go about peddling it? Ebay? Craigslist? There are several on eBay right now running for upwards of $700. That's never a bad place to try and sell something and it tends to be a good indicator what is hot in the market and what you can expect to get for whatever it is you're trying to sell. Not always the case but often is. Worst-case scenario is it doesn't sell and you're out nothing.

Thank you to all thats replied. It'd be alot easier if companies would put the kind of felt along with the x's. Instead of just fur felt. Or just have x's. Thanks guys!

What do you want for it heyday? I'd be happy with half of new price, whatever that is. Sill new in the box. Have had it for well over 20 years. But probably best plan is to put it on eBay and see what falls out.

Fedora's is the way to go!
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....
