Will mink go into a weasel box ? Have tracks of both in the same area and have caught a couple of mink in muskrat sets under water. In NJ all body grips need to below water unless set in tidal water so I wouldn’t be able to use a traditional mink box set with a 110 in front of it. Thanks in advance

I think most trappers use a wooden rat trap inside the weasel box. I have had mink get hit by a rat trap that I had set for weasel or chipmunks that was set outside a box. It doesn't kill them; probably just gives them a headache and quite often they will leave with your trap.

Yes I had one two years ago get in far enough to snap that rat trap. The fresh snow told the story.

I set mink boxes with conibear in them, the front has a 3 inch " I think" hole in it that I screw on. That way non targets, cats, dogs, coons, etc don't get into them. They seem to work better than an open ended box actually. I mostly use these after freeze up, on lake shores and cattail/tall grass marshes. There is something about catching those big super furred winter mink.

If I was targeting mink the hole would be tennis ball size

Never got a mink in my weasel boxes and never had much luck with mink in boxes I made for them with body grip traps in them.I have had coon reach in my weasel boxes though.

Just be careful. In N.J., the C.O.'s still consider a rat trap, used for fur bearers, a killer type trap, whether in a box or not, cannot be set above water. I've had many discussions with them about this, and was told, don't do it. I know, crazy.

I agree. The only time I had any luck in boxes was when there was snow on the ground and times were tougher for them when it came to food. I had plenty of them circle the box many times and never go in.

I caught a small female mink a few years ago in a weasel box that had a #1 longspring inside. When I checked, the mink had chewed the hole bigger, and I am not sure if it was before or after the catch. If I recall I had a 1 3/4 inch hole. It was set in the winter on the ice.
