I got a yote that the hair slipped on part of the hide. Both arm pits and a spot on the hips all the hair came out. Question is, Do I present it to the buyer that way or cut out the spots where the hair fell out?

I would cut out the bald spots and sew them,as long as they are small.Still a good pelt with lots of useable fur.
Hair slipping in the armpit area is often from folded skin not drying.
If there is large areas of hairslip dont waste your time trying to cut and sew it.

The skin has been boarded and dried. Didn't indicate any slipping until after the skin was dried and started to comb. Thanks for the advice Boco!

Over fleshing in those areas. Could rehydrate those areas, cut out, and sew, but.....

With this coyote market...hope that coyote is at least a pale high plains XXL.

One factor to consider before you decide to cut and sew, is how will the pelt look when you are finished.

You want the pelt to look like a normal coyote pelt, so that it doesn’t look like it has been cut and sewn. If the pelt is going to be misshapen, forget it and leave it the way it is.

And the Auctions recommend leaving those legs in the pelt so they don't tear them. I see FHA is recommending pinning out front legs prior to turning pelt and leaving them inside. Must be having issues related to the earlier recommendation?

I think it would look rather odd if I cut and sew. I might just leave and see what I get. Yes it's a XXL otherwise I wouldn't even bother with it.
Thanks everyone

Dont understnd you question Dirt.Front legskins when left on, are dried along with the pelt when the pelt is on the board fur in.When the pelt is turned fur out the dry legskins can be left inside, except on complete skins where certain buyers want to inspect the handling of the feet.In those cases the front legskins are turned to be outside the pelt when the pelt is turned fur out.

The problem with hairlip associated with legskins/armpits is in the initial drying of the skin when fur in.It is caused by folds when skins are dried in the vertical position as opposed to drying horizontal which will prevent that issue.

I leave all legskins long on canines and cats. I make extra money with them.

Hate to tell you this, but when I turn a fur out pelt not every spot on the pelt is completely dry. Does not matter if that hide is touching wood, it would matter on not completely dry legs bunched up between hide and hide.

I'm not the one recommending pinning out front legs to make sure they are completely dry, FHA is. Must be a reason.

I put cut plastic coat hangers in the legs of my coyotes for skin out drying. Leg’s are as dry as the rest of the hide.

For conversation's sake, what is the point of leaving the legs extremely long? Am I being penalized on grading for my legs being cut off at a shorter length?

Depends on the use.
I use the legskins on canines,so if I was buying them I would choose pelts with full legskins.
Someone making fur ruffs or garments wouldnt care.
For canines except taxi species, the industry standard is to cut off at the elbow/ankle.
Cats its wrist/ankle.

If the legs are left inside of the pelt (per FHA recommendations), how does a buyer via an online international auction know how long the legs are?

I guess I fail to see the purpose of leaving the legs at any length for normal purposes such as garments. Cut them short and have no chance of slippage in the armpits. No clothes hangers or special drying required.

Thanks for the response Boco

If there are large holes where the front legs were you will be docked. You need to leave a little of the leg on so the skin keeps its integrity thru the dressing process-same if there are large holes where the ears were.

For years I have banded off and cut the front legs off. NEVER have I been docked or downgraded for it. No slips no issues ever. [Linked Image]

I do the same as M.T. above. Short legs for me no worrying about slipping
