A heavier material that doesn't blow around noisily is needed

And lower it into a Dry container ....not liquid .or it will spray instantly everything

Fill slowly and 90% of the time it won't

GARRY, find the neighbor kid that is always causing trouble and tell him you will give him 10 bucks to move the cage to the curb. Then set way back , upwind and enjoy. Merry Christmas and hope you feel better soon!!

That's why I like cage traps with drop doors and washers as locks .
Just cover the cage with a blanket , carry it to your truck , put it in and take to a safe place to dispatch it .
Or cover with a blanket , having most of the blanket on your side of the trap , slowly roll it over on it's top , the door falls open .
Watch it leave if you want .
I do it 5-6 times a summer while catching problem coons and opossums , and feral cats .
Never had them spray .

Sir, sorry about your current health situation. Even more sorry I don't have any good advice for you, as I have the worlds worst record for smell free release. My cages are the washer lock type. I can tell you a hundred ways not to do it. One is do not loan them to an old curmudgeon that wants to get the coons out of his barn. Especially if he owns a 12 gage shotgun, one dead smelly, ruined (big holes all the way through). Cage trap and no offers to replace trap. I do wish you luck, hope you are better soon. I know this has no relevance to your situation but it is cathartic for me. Get better soon.

Well, I have over the years released probably at least 200 skunks... but never have I had one as contrary as this one. I finally succeeded in getting it done this morning, but not without a little noticeable odor. I am sure that neighbors will be ignored.

OKAY... just to set the record straight for some of our neighbors to the north... the ones that leave their animals in foothold traps for several days until they freeze solid before checking them... as was mentioned in MY comments about it "dying of old age" in the trap, that was a tongue-in-cheek comment. When I left the animal yesterday, when it was raining, I covered most of the trap with a yard cart as seen in the photo below, and it was quite active this morning when I released it.

I have tried over the years, when I have read a comment I questioned, that someone else made, and before I blurted out a hurtful or beleaguering comment back, I have sent a PM and ask the commenter what his intent was. This has saved a whole lot of embarrassment on my part and potential hurt on everyone concerned. Enough said.

After I released the striped devil this morning, he ran over and crawled under my tool shed. I then knocked off other traps.

I was hoping I could find a place to trap a beaver this year, but don't think I will be up to doing so. Our beaver season started today.

Well, I hope everyone has a healthy and prosperous New Year.

The thing causing the problem for you more than anything Garry, is that is a young of the year skunk. The young ones are trigger happy, while the older ones you can treat pretty rough and not get sprayed. Covering them slowly in a cage, is the best choice, just takes a bit more time than an old skunk!

Thanks Lee... I wondered about that, but couldn't get close enough, the beginning to give it a good ID. By the time it got done it had about 4" of mud caked inside the cage with it. Well, anyway it is all over with except for the aroma throughout the neighborhood.

Thank you one and all...

I've dealt with quite of few skunks in a variety of ways. This may sound unorthodox but you could use a 6' piece of metal ( I've used rebar or 3/8" rod bent at the end) to drag that cage out of sight for dispatch or just roll it on its top so the door will flop open. When dragging or rolling the cage with you at a distance the skunk is side tracked and focused on the cage moving that it doesn't spray.

Good job Garry. Glad the skunk was on his way without too much trouble.

For the next one,you can save yourself some time and dikking around if you cover the cage, and leave the handle out the top before your catch is made.

That is a great idea Robert, but just think of all of the fun everyone would have missed at my expense... grin

I just use an old blanket , feel around and you can grab the handle .
Caught many and it works even with the young ones .
I tried to find my video of how to do it , but it's not easy with so many saved pictures and videos on the same site .
