I always heard not to put fish or critters to be mounted in a self defrosting freezer but I wonder if it’s really good for any meat or fur to go through the defrost cycle everyday.Any expertise on this one?

Manual defrost for me. The stuff in the freezer above the fridge is short term storage and we don't keep the ice cream in there!

The only frost free that I own is the small one on the refrigerator. All of my stand alone freezers are manual defrost.

No frost free freezers for me
If you must first freeze what you put in there then wrap in towels. This will keep the freezer burn away

I see no one actually addressed the question. In theory, the self defrost feature is a bad thing for meat and such. But in reality it's not really a big deal and the downsides are greatly exaggerated by people on the internet, like many other things. The thaw cycle each day is just enough to thaw a minuscule layer of surface frost on the freezer walls, its not enough to actually thaw a frozen object, not even the outer surface. Over a many months or years it can eventually hasten freezer burn, so anything I know will be frozen for a really long time I keep in the old chest freezer. But for normal items that will only be in there for a few months or so it's not a big deal.
