I'm retired, and my legs don't do too well. I need to keep moving or I won't be walking
This has been a strange fall with little snow, and I didn't take my muzzle loader elk till last week. I haven't really trapped much the past 20 years. 10 years ago I made 30 martin boxes fand 120 conibears.
I did set a single box for 2 nights near elk camp. . . Are martin that much like mink? Checking out the box but not committing to the inside I have all sorts of 35 year old lure for mink coon beaver and canines. Or should I use bait?
I know mink check out holes and often from the outside. How do I get martin to commit

Chunk of beaver or muskrat is what a lot of the guys use. I''ve sold a lot of beaver carcasses to folks from northern Idaho.
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

I've trapped marten in many, many different locations and in a variety of habitats for well over 50 years. In my opinion, they are one of the easiest furbearers to trap. I don't know how many marten I've trapped over the years. I still get out every year and take a handful. In Idaho, it seems to me that fresh beaver or muskrat meat is a good bait, and an added dab of "Gusto" lure is beneficial. Elevate your Conibear box off the ground 4-6 feet and use a leaning pole up to the box entrance. The leaning pole, in my opinion, does two very valuable things; the pole itself is a visual attractor, as marten use the pole as an access to the subnivean (under snow) for hunting voles and mice. Two, elevating the boxes reduces the catch of females (your breeding population), as it seems to females don't like to climb as readily as males. You should be catching 75%+ males. Anchor your Conibear chain so the trap, once it springs, is hanging well above the ground/snow to reduce the chances of mice and squirrels clipping the hair, and where it hangs away from the bole of the tree to reduce the chances of pitch getting in the marten fur.
Best of luck to you sir! Let us know how the season goes.
Jack

Yes beaver bait and a good lure in an elevated 120 BG trap box. Being opportunistic hunters and SCAVENGERS marten and fisher will both respond to most any bait or lure. If they are in the general locality when you set they will find it.

Not everybody has beaver for bait. Right now I'm using duck parts, spruce hen parts, lynx, and deer hide. Don't get hung up on the bait. Location.

I agree Dirt. Any bait. In Idaho, however, all four of the baits you mention are illegal, I believe.

^^^^^^^ Dirt X2 The three most important things about successful marten trapping are exactly the same as the three most important things about real estate investing; location, location, location. If the marten aren't there you can't catch them. Were you in marten habitat where you were elk hunting? Was there any snow? Making sets on marten tracks is pretty sure to result in a marten catch.

I don't use an attractor but always use bait and gusto. Beaver and muskrat both work well. Just remember in Idaho you can't use any part of game fish, game birds or game mammals. Also no bait can be visible within 30 feet of the trap. They do allow bait in the back of a box. Good luck. They are my favorite land furbearer to trap.

I think they like some eye appeal too so I always use bait in addition to some lure. Meat is great but feathers work real well if they are legal for you. I caught one on a chocolate chip cookie once so they aren't real picky.
Don't overdo it on the skunk IMO I wonder how much they are like mink,, bait isnt all that tempting like a hole. When my brother was young he and another guy teamed up and set out for 6 days in December. They made 100 pocket sets each. The other fellow used bait. My brother didnt use any bait. they had an incredible catch. Catching 40 mink each, no coon and a handfull or rats What do you mean by dont over do the skunk? Keep it out of the box? Shouldnt be unable to smell it getting out of the truck?

Bait rules have always been that way. The trappers organizations have been working on changing them. I don't know if anything has been decided yet.

I stand corrected. Just checked the rules and they were changed 9/30 to allow non-edible parts to be legal. Another win by our organizations!
