We are not in typical mountain lion country but there are a few that move through. I would hope that I would never have to release one of them beasts.

Generally it takes two people to do.

Catch pole. You need to get the other leg through so you can control its chest. Just getting it around the neck has a good chance of killing it, as the main arteries are very close to the surface.

Axe, Canoe Paddle or Tall 330 stabilizer can be used to pin them down also.

I have released them with a catch pole. Both you and the otter have typically had enough if each other when it is over. And you will need a nap.

This will give you an idea of how otter fight catchpoles. We take them live to sell. It's a rodeo most of the time.

If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I have released 7-8 otters caught in 330s. I will not risk being bit by anything which can survive being caught in a 330.
The top of an otters head is very flat. So is the handle end of a 330 setter. A decent rap with the flat of the setters to the flat top of the otters head will buy you enough time to compress and lock the springs. Work fast and clear out! They all swam away, no worse for the wear.

Ah. That makes sense. The whole time I was watching the video I was thinking if you slip and fall on that slicked up bank you were going to slide right down to the otter.

Yes, knocking them out is a stupid suggestion.

Done it. Never again.

Many times easier to release a wolf

How do you put the cites tag on the live otter, LOL. Doesn't sound like much fun.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.
