Fur taking/big cat question..

Any of you Idaho gents or ladies on here run hounds out yonder? I put in for the Idaho big game houndsmen permit draw the other day... I just sent in my memebership to the east Idaho houndsmen association.. Thinking If i get drawn i'd like to take my coonhoiunds out yonder and see what kind of mischief we could get into..I see Idaho on my retirement list possibly in a few years.. Been spending some time out there off an on and absolutely love it.. Think Stanley Idaho is God's country about 8 months out of the year.. Thinking SE Idaho is better for an all around kind of place to live.

In Oregon’s Great Basin area harvest stats are about split 50-50 for hunted and trapped cats. One may assume that hunted was with hound assistance.
Similar terrain so I wouldn’t be surprised if Idaho didn’t have similar results. One thing though is Oregon gets some out of state pressure from Washington and I don’t believe they can hunt Idaho.

Stanley is nice... if you're a billionaire and can afford the real estate prices. I avoid that place except to drive through going out for work. Outfitters around here keep after the cats pretty hard once a good snowpack is on, and especially after a new storm. Haven't seen as many individuals running cats here as I do the outfitters. I'm just hoping none of those long tails end up in my traps. Have to release them even with a tag in my pocket. Don't want that kind of headache.

Appreciate the comments gentlemen.. I didn't realize Stanley was so expensive - only visitied a few times..The scenery and proximity to Boise probably help that a good bit. I'd not like to let one loose either.. tag or no!

Interesting on the Oregon numbers, would have thought the trapped portion of cats would be much higher..

Stanley must have changed a lot since I was there last. It looked like a town out of an old west movie when I was first there in the mid 80's and hadn't changed much as far as I could tell 20 years later. Granted I wasn't shopping for realestate, but it appeared to be mostly working cattle ranches. I remember how furious the ranchers were about the wolf introduction, and as it turns out, with good reason. At the time, Sun Valley to the south of Stanley over Galena Pass, was where the rich folks were.

Larry have you looked into Nevada for running your dogs? I know a couple guys in the Ely Nv area. For mt lions as Nv doesn't allow nonres bobcat harvest.

Idaho is getting expensive to live mainly due to real estate. Rundown fixer up homes in Idaho Falls are selling for over $200,000. Two years ago they were 30-40% lower. Out of staters, especially Californians, are selling their modest $800,000 homes in California and then purchasing equivalent homes here for 1/2 the price.

It won't take those Cali expats very long to ruin Idaho for real people.

NV Wrangler, I have not.. Ely Nevada would be absolutely a fantastic historical trip to cut a hound loose.. Mr Wiley Carroll would approve from on high I'd just bet.. I didn't know Mr Carroll other than to chat hounds and trapping at a few trapping conventions many, many years ago.. I had worn my hunting coat to one of the national events on a cold day and he made it a point to stop and ask If i ran hounds.. This would have been in the early/mid 80's.. I still have a couple of his books packed away.. Was quite a nice gentleman and it didn't take long to realize he was the real deal and was tougher than whang leather.. Told a story about being on a bad killing lion and laying out over night to catch him.. Hauled his horse in the pick up truck and if he got caught out on a track he had what was in his saddle bags and on his back..yeah, made my roughest coon hunt seem like a stroll in the park.
