After 33 years of trapping with foothold traps I finally bought a few dog proof traps to play with.
What are some good suggestions on bait? Anise? Vanilla spiked marshmallows?

Cheap dry cat food, marshmallows with a shot of vanilla and a packet of jello, sardines. Your imagination really is the only limit on dp baits. With the current market, i am going with whatever U can find the cheapest. Should my inlaws have some acreage they have farmed and I walked the field picking up corn the combine missed on the edges and turn rows which wasnt much about a gallon once I shelled it.

I picked up some
Sullivan - Sugar Berries DP Coon Bait - Quart

For our trapper education course.

I’ll let you know how they work.

I usually just use some dog food and add some lure .

I've had the best luck with tuna/glycol.

Whatever you use, make sure it is something they want to eat. If it tastes good they will stick around and get caught. If it is bitter they will leave without digging into the trap enough to pull the trigger. (Some commercial baits smell good enough to get a coon to a pocket set, but aren't particularly palletable to coon)

Also, a dry bait makes traps much easier to clean up after season.

Dry dog food or corn with a scent attractant near it.

I used dry cat food and had problems with them dumping it out to eat. so the best thing I found is marshmellows. I put one under the trigger that they have to pull up and also one on top in the hole so they can see it and it acts as an enticer. I wouldn't use anything like raw fish that's gonna get rotten if nothing works it...
