Southern Ontario is polluted with the black phase grey squirrel. Black phase apparently more common in northern part of their range.
Grey squirrells are known to migrate in large numbers quite long distances from time to time so maybe thats why there are some black phase showing up in your area.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

There is a beauty that just died under my front yard tree half hour ago. I think it was hit by a car.
Just happy to be here.

I've read that black is the dominant color if bred into them. We have both colors here and fox squirrel

This BLM thing is way outta hand. There are black squirrels in Marysville KS, Lincoln, NE and Council Bluffs IA. Fox skirrels I think. The big ones. I'd like to have some to transplant to other towns. I love to see squirrels. Except the smashed ones.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Black squirrels are a melanistic subgroup of squirrels with black coloration on their fur. The phenomenon occurs with several species of squirrels, although it is most frequent with the eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel. Black morphs of the eastern gray and fox squirrels are the result of an abnormal pigment gene
