I've had bad luck holding big coon in single longsprings period. If that's all you have then set them, but I much prefer strong #1.5 coils. One lost coon, at todays prices, would have bought you a half dozen #1.5 coils.

Lots raccoons have been caught with #1 and #1.5 longsprings. If you doubt their strength, use them in drowning sets and don't give the raccoon anything sturdy to grab onto. If you want to convert them to a #11 or #2, try this archived thread. Clark

You can take a large diameter dowel rod (I use a broom handle) or pipe and put it in the spring and rap it with a hammer. Surprising how much that will strengthen a spring.

It's worked for me more than once or I wouldn't have reccomended it. Some springs are so weak there is nothing you can do but replace them.
I used to see those inserts that you put in the springs in catalogs. I never tried them and I don't see them anymore so maybe they didn't work very well. Seemed like a good idea and always figured I would try them, but never got around to it.

I figured I would just put a couple of wraps of wire around the spring and the helper. I wonder if they still make them?
I've thought about putting a coil spring inside a long spring to beef it up, I wonder how that would work?

You can find the helper springs at MTP. They call them "Lightning Springs". They will definitely spruce up those old LS but like Tex said, they are difficult to keep in there. If you can't tack weld them, I would only use them for mink/muskrat traps. I feel that a raccoon would eventually find it and rip it out if not tacked in there. Clark

Clark, wouldn't a few wraps of wire hold them in?

The wire will work. We have around 100 #2 DLS on the coon line. Most have the helper spring incerts (victors anyway) they really help with speed and strength. I tack weld them in now but I've had some wired in for years before that. Actually on the chain end the thing that the chain goes to holds that end in pretty well.

I'll bet JB Weld would do just as well.
