I’ll be picking up 3 baby goats next spring in the hopes of raising them up to be backcountry pack goats. With the price of lumber what it is, I’m trying to come up with a cheaper way to fence them in! Has anybody tried an electric fence for goats and if so what are your experiences? Other fencing options are welcome too! Thanks!

electro netting may work for you

they can slip though a lot of fencing epecially when small

once grown cattle panel can work

4x4 woven with a hot wire at the top is common

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If a fence will hold water, it'll hold goats.

Yup!

Was told once, take a bucket of water. Throw water on fence, if no water gets through, your goats won’t either.

We use electro stop pluss 48 from premier 1 with a speedrite 2000 charger on 20w solar pannal. About onceca month i have to charge the battery becust the pannal is not enough.

The fence works. We move it around the farm and its much cheaper than fencing it with perminant fence. I beleave im at about 5 years with some of the first fence i bought. I buy more to expand when i have extra cash.

It keeps the goats and my chickens in and things that want to eat them out. Except for raptors.

Whrn they are young they stay pen made out of goat pannals. Like cattel panels but closer spacing and much higher price. 3 sides are fenced with them the 4th side is the barn.

Solar Panels and components are fairly cheap on Amazon. I'm running a PrimaShock8 charger from Premier for cattle with a controller from amazon and a used panel and battery I had with no problems.

Goats are walking bear bait, you can ride a horse, you only need 1 horse to carry a lot of gear, and you won't look like you're from Bozeman in the mountains

It was a kit my wife bought the charher stand pannel and charge controller. Yes u do need to change out parts.

I also need to read my post before posting. That one was very poor.

The kits are enticing, I've been trying to do things a bit cheaper and learn as I go. I still need to add another solar panel to my solar pump and a float in the tank so I can use the controll box I bought with the pump.

Goats are a pain in the butt but to answer you question, yes an electric fence will work.

The gallagher website used to have fence spacing suggestions for spacing.

Also know that goats are one of the harder livestock animals to control with electric fence. It takes a larger charger to zap a goat than say a cow or horse.

The most important thing in electric fencing is having a very good grounding system

Good luck

We have 4' field fence with a strand of barbed wire on top, they stay inside of that pretty good. I reinforce with cattle panels where needed, like the bucks pen where the girls like to come over and wiggle their tails at the boys. Our goats are pretty much homebodies though and even when they've gotten out they stick around.

My Dad ended up making a yoke that looked like a oversize slingshot. He fastened it to their necks so they couldn't get down and crawl under a fence. They still ate the flowers and buds off Mom's red rose bushes and that was the end of the goats.
They will also eat the clothes off the clothes line, jump up on top of your car, and eat tin cans.

Mine stay in and even when the kids left the gate opem this week they didnt go far. They ran to meet me on the gator whrn i was on my way out to lock up the chickens, get eggs and milk the goats. When we move them they jus follow alomg like dogs. Im sure being bottel feed helps but we have no problems keeping them in.

I use fiberglass fence posts from Tractor Supply and then go every other wire tab with regular electric fence wire and the ones in between with the white 3/4" fabric tape. We have had up to 13 goats and they never bothered the fence. They're actually pretty smart and once they get zapped they remember.
