For flat shooting, at a distance, .300 magnum maybe?

I know some are using 243 it is about a flat trajectory for them, there was a pair on that swamp people show that would get them with a 243

there was a guy I used to talk to he was a missionary in south america and a re-loader , he found casting round balls and placing them in the shotgun shells they could get in the amazon worked well
they can basically only get 12ga shot shells in the amazon the round ball penetrated better than the foster slugs , he was able to bring in a round ball mold the melt and pour their own

I happen to own a former gator gun it is a 30-30 win an incredibly accurate one with 170gr corelocks it has very little finish left where it rubbed on the boat

lots of things work accurate with some penetration

I could see 223 because cheap and available run with the green tips

most anything could work

yall are worrying about ricochet I bet they are a lot less worried about it than you are

with a low angle to the water it probably just goes into the far bank

ricochet when your coming in at a shallow angle the bullet skips across the water without going very high

testing with 7.62x39 they found if the bullet was at an angle greater than about 13 degrees it didn't ricochet off hard surfaces , and the smoothness of the surface had a lot to do with ricochet as the angle got closer to 13 degrees

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1355030621000691?via%3Dihub

like a rock skipping bullets don't change angle significantly and they loose energy when they strike the surface of the water

we had a flooded pasture we used to skip bullets into steel on

If had to hit a nickel sized spot at 100 yards I'd use my .204.

Would guess 60s; but in today's world, any ammo they can get their hands on.

223 would be my guess. Or any round that the shooter can shoot accurately. From what I have seen while living in SC, gators are not all that tough when ya hit the off switch.

When a gator is shot in open water, doesn’t it sink? Seems it would be hard to find and retrieve if the shooter was a long way from an open water kill site.

Whatever you decide to tote into that environment, make sure that you aren't too proud of it. It will get banged up .

So his favorite thing is a .22-250 with hyper explosive light bullet . Said he lovea the Varmint Grenades. Now the reason for this is ricochets. According to him with there's type of bullets going the speed he's pushing them if you do mis and hit water they just fragment to nothing so there's no real chance of down range problems. Also he's shooting them basically in the ear alot of the time and that varmint bullets basically craters out their brain. Said even if it isn't a complete kill shot it will roll them over and knock them out till they can be snagged and brought to the bank
