I have a beagle thats a little over a year old. Mostly an outdoor dog. I'd like to take her trapping with me this season. I've done some reading on trapperman about trapline dogs, and training them. She knows sit, stay, and come pretty well. However I still have a bunch of questions, would a beagle make a good trapline dog? Does she need any other training? Would her scent scare or keep any animals away from my sets? If she wouldn't make a good trapline dog, then none of those matter. But if she would is there any other advice from others with trapline dogs?

I think most any crap eating alley dog will do if trainable and trained for the trapline. Depends on what you want from her? You don't really train a Beagle to run Rabbits, you just take them out and let them. They either hunt or they don't. Beagles have superb noses, they can follow a rabbit across a parking lot on freezing cold snowy day with a good breeze blowing. But Beagles are kinda smallish and not really equipped to take on a pack of 'Yotes.

I have a beagle sized mug I take on the line. He knew about the same as yours when I started and now he knows to follow instead of lead. He learned that on his own. [Linked Image]

I really just want the compainionship and if she could point out a few extra spots with signs that'd be great too. Have you ever had any problem with the dog getting into traps?

That is why he follows now. He learned and won't go ahead now until I stop at a catch.

Lok has found a trap or two and learned rather quickly what te word trap means. He stays close by as we near a set and helps out when he can. I'm sure there are far better trap line dogs out there but he is good company. And since he's been part of the team we've never been attacked by alligators or grizzly bears! [Linked Image]

I think my Lacy is gonna make a pretty tolerable trapline dog she loves to sniff and dig and she’s got more sense than most people

I don't take mine on the line with me because I try to go pretty fast. I do let her run infront of the four wheeler alot and she will stop on a dime if there is coyote scat in the road or trail. Works perry well while I'm collecting for set making.

There is an article in "American Trapper". this month, good read. We have two dogs. One is too high energy and tooooo curious. I'd catch him every 5 minutes. The other dog is wary and cautious. I caught her the first time out, in the first trap I set. Ever since, she watches from a distance when I make/remake a set. She stepped in one other trap after that and that was a blind set.
