Just had a thought. Has anyone ever tried to add dye to FMJ? Seems you could combine steps and get it done all at once.

The tannins in logwood dye are to free the trap of mold to moderate amounts of rust because of the tanic acid found in the product. The color of the trap afterward is a secondary result of the process to me. I suppose if the traps are being set exposed, the color may matter to a degree but not much.

If using FMJ, the purpose is to protect the trap. I don’t see the need to dye in that situation.

On the other hand, people do all kinds of things that aren’t necessary. I would say no, because there’s no need.

Plus, FMJ is applied at room temperature. If you dyed the wax, it would do nothing but dye the wax.

Dying is good for traps that have some rust. It helps slow down the rust a bit. Wax or fmj is what keeps moisture out of the trap after dying. If you have no rust, there is absolutely no reason to dye the trap.

Logwood dye only works quickly when the trap is boiled in it. It will work at room temp or colder but takes a long time. I will throw traps that I might want to use again in a pot of logwood dye solution in my garage after a good cleaning. Usually I just keep the last batch of dye from the fall. They might sit in the solution for a month, but it works….. I just wax them before using. Fmj would be fine as well. It’s easier than reboiling the traps in dye.

I have alway uaed speed dip. Cleaning traps this time . Going to use logwood. Speed dip and fuel to mix it will got too costly $$. Then going to fmj. My inlaws give me a new fish fryer just to use for my traps. Even got a full bottle of gas with it. Cant wait season will be here before u know it.
