What do you guys use to repairs holes in your pelts? Needle size and or type, what kind of stitching material do you use? I have often wanted to know the proper way to repair the holes.

I use fur sewing needles, the size varies as depending on the size of the repair. I used to use dental floss for all my repairs but now I'm using a waxed heavy thread that also is designed for fur sewing.

I use the same waxed thread the most taxidermist use for sewing up hides with, and curved needles.

For a good repair go with the stuff above.

For me selling at the auction houses for the fur market I get less detailed. I've heard that if you have a large hole your critter of course will be graded damaged but also might get downsized because of the size of the hole.

So I try to put those criters on a board & tack the hole shut so the critter holds a normal shape. When I have to sew I use a hamer & nail to make my sew holes & use a big cheap neddle with dental floss to make the repair.

Hope this helps.

you may have to go through taxidermy supplier for the cape thread. wal-mart has needles. a heavy thread is probably all you need.

And if your hole is fairly large or jagged cut a diamond (black line) around, and discard the jagged parts. The diamond should be lengthways on the body.....and it will pull similar types of hair into the stitch.
