I believed your description of "long range collection " until I saw the 2 ar's lying there. LOL

BOLT guns all the way !!!
OK flood the thread with picks of shot groups coming from ar's.
THEN tell me what action did Sgt Hathcock use? Back before laser range finders and instant ballistics were available !!

Yes sir both have,,, but there are gain twist in some barrel to seem to have a advantage for certain applications in a cut barrel over a straight twist.

Had a Douglas barrel on a 25-06 that shot 5/16at 100 5 shot groups without to much fuss if I did my part. And I did think of them.

Imo what makes a good barrel is if the cold bore or first shot hits in the same place as the rest because the first shot is the most important to me.

I would definitely give them a call then. Lot of advantage to being that close to someone who does work for you.

The stainless barrel on the one is a Krieger. You might be surprised to see what those fast-twist AR-15 rifles will do with a 77 grain Sierra at 1,000 yards. You can get a second one on the way about the time the first one lands, which adds a certain value.

I used to believe this too.

I taught long range precision rifle work for 6 years and have had numerous 16-18" AR-10s deliver 10-12" groups at my 1,200 yard target.

If you dial on 73 MOA from my 75 yard zero, those 10/22s will keep them on a 12" disk at 400 yards. The one with the camo stock is suppressed.

I prefer a good bolt gun for long range myself, and find them easier to shoot consistently, but one simply cannot discount the potential of a well-built AR-10/AR-15.

No need, you know they're out there, LOL.

Hathcock used a Winchester M-70, which, AT THE TIME, was state of the art. That was getting on 60 years ago and much has changed. I believe Sgt Hathcock could have used anything and had similar results. 'It's not the arrow, but the indian that matters".

Those rifles carry barrels from Krieger, Bartlein, Hart, Lilja and one even has an 1/2 MOA ER Shaw on it and I stick by what I said: The man doing the installation work is actually the key factor.

The beatings will continue until morale improves.

Didn't Hatchcock have access to a semi auto /fully auto? BUT chose the bolt gun ? Why did he do that ? One word. Accuracy !!! Plus he topped it with a straight 8 power unertl scope.
As for the arrow part MMM some what but you take away the torrents, range finders , ballistic charts / blue tooth synced scopes and see how good lots of "long range" shooters really are. Plus saw a long range competition once didn't go to a second one. Basically the guns were locked in a vise and the shooters kids could have walked up and touched the trigger and not missed. Plus the "rifles" themselves looked like a directional mic the cia would use.

I've had 2 rifles built with Lilja barrels.
Very happy.

Never thought I'd say this about an SEC lover, but you finally made an accurate post.

Carbon6 makes a much better carbon wrapped barrel than Proof. Carbon 6 uses McGowen blanks. Nothing wrong with wanting a stainless barrel though. Nice to have options.

X2 on the Carbon Six!

I have rifles built with pretty much every manufacturer mentions and the Carbon Six shoots just as well as any of them.

Put a premium barrel on an ar and see what it will do! they will rival a bolt gun any day, Les Baer use to guarantee 1/4" groups from his, but they weren't cheap! My custom built AR-10 in 6.5 Creedmoor will surprise you loaded with 140 gr Bergers. Same for my mike milley built AR 15 in 25 wssm.

"What is so accurate about it?"

A pun just doesn't go over sometimes.

But I agree with him about bolt rifles.
