Maybe the lack of copper in the money is responsible for its huge gain on the US dollar recently? Last time I was in Canada was in Sept 1991 when my folks and I visited Nova Scotia to see where my long dead maternal grandmother came from. We went by train up from western MA to Montreal over the Halifax, rented a car and putted around parts of NS, got back on the train down to Toronto (spent day and half there), then another train to Winnipeg, and finally bus down to Grand Forks. The best exchange rate we ever got was maybe $1.15 CAN for each USD, but usually down in the $1.10 range. I looked today and I could still get $1.20 CAN for each USD as of May 18th. Still a better deal for me than in 1991, especially with inflation factored in...

Nonpc, 1991 was the highest our dollar has been in the past 30 years interestingly enough. Hope the train ride was enjoyable.
Disclaimer: I find it enjoyable reading the responses on threads like these. I often read on this site that Canadians shouldn’t worry about the USA but it seems that when the shoe is on the other foot.......
I hope it opens soon, it’ll mean things are getting better, who wouldn’t want that?

Nonpc, 1991 was the highest our dollar has been in the past 30 years interestingly enough. Hope the train ride was enjoyable I think VIA is at least twice the quality of Amtrak, although I haven't ridden Amtrak in over 25 years as well. I kept hoping in seeing a moose or bear going through the Ontario northern forest through the train window but no such luck. Much of our crossing was at night. Supposedly, there was a moose spotted in a North Dakota crop field soon after we crossed the border at Pembina but it was at last light and the bus windows were so dirty that I didn't see it. P.S. I thought the U.S. border guards that talked to us on the bus when we entered were rude jerks. I watched them kick a young guy off the bus because they didn't believe his story that he was going to visit his gf in Mpls for two weeks because he didn't have "enough money" on him. Maybe she wasn't interested in his "money" . If I was him, since it was nearly dark, I would have walked a couple of miles either east or west, crossed the line, and then hitchhiked to Mpls. No drone flights along that border in 1991...

The US shipping laws have existed for many many years and well before Covid. The law that is hurting the Alaskan Cruise business is the law that states that foreign vessels can not exercise coastal trade in American ports. Simply stated, a foreign vessel picking up US commodities in New Orleans may not travel to Miami and offload that freight. A US ship could, but not a foreign ship. The same rule applies to traffic from our West Coast ports and Alaskan ports. To comply with the rule. Alaska tourism cruises often started in Vancouver CA and ended somewhere in Alaska. They can not depart from LA, SF, or Seattle unless they next land in Canada (which is now closed, I think) en route to Sitka or Anchorage, etc.
Have these rules changed for the tourist industry? I am quoting old laws that may have been changed.
If there were any US registered cruise ships in existence, they could depart a US port and put into Alaska without violating the law. Doubt there are any US cruise ships. Even Disney ships carry a foreign registry I bet.

Cruise ships are infested with all kinds of diseases, glad they cant come here. That explains what’s wrong with my wife then. She’s a “cruiseaholic”, lol. And yes, she’s already booked for this Fall I believe. I’ve been on a few myself...only to be a good husband and ensure my future turkey trips.

Leftists that run your and our governments. That's who. I honestly do not care what you all do up North unless it effects the US economy or interests of the US such as the fur trade. I care even less about that now because I have decided I will never send another thing to any Canadian auction house. LLL

LLL, good for you. In reality it’s foolish a nation of 350 million relies on one ten times smaller to sell their raccoons. Go you, get er dun in Iowa. That's just it. They are now unreliable hence I won't ship any more. It should have no bearing on you but without US fur they will be reduced to selling seals and polar bears. They need us more than we need them. I have many fur buyers right here in Iowa to get er dun. I don't need to trap for my livelihood though so if fur is not going to be profitable I will fish or hunt or just stay home and watch tv until the grass is ready to mow again. By the way we can mow 33 weeks a year here. Oh yea you betcha. lol, LLL

Once the broader is opened up will the Canadian Government require proof of vaccination? I have no plans on getting the shots and most likely will not be allowed to enter Canada. The vaccination rate in the USA is 40% for both shots 50% for one dose. I don’t see it climbing above 60% for adults Without a doubt you will need a vaccine to get into the country. Sounds like we will need one for interprovincial travel within Canada. Even creepy Joe is against vaccine passports...that says something.

Our southern border is better than your southern border. Maybe claim refugee status (from commie Joe and the Ho),maybe Trudope will let you in.

I wondered about that too Grumpy.I think it must have something to do with our awesome hunting and fishing and the freedom of the wilderness.
