When I put up coon, they just don't look the same on the board as most of yours do. I think I am making my beginning cut wrong. I have been cutting from ankle to anus to ankle. I've spent all evening searching the fur handling archives and see tons of pic's showing coon on boards but I can't find a picture or video of somebody making those initial cuts. Can anybody help me out?

Sounds right. You need to look close and see the line between the flank fur and the belly fur, and cut along that margin.
The T4K vid's show the "money cut" pretty good.
Check to see when your states association has a fur handling class.

you get a bigger size, on a coon that is cut from ankle to penis(or where the penis would be on a sow, if in fact it was a boar) to ankle. stretch legs out laterally and you will see that this is a strait cut ankle to ankle. then cut strait up from penis to tail. cut around ankles and peel. (I actually cut an inch or so below the penis, leaving the hole if it looks ok when I stretch) PS. 4 SSL's at NAFA, cant be wrong. you feel me?! wink

If your cutting from ankle to anus you are losing 3" to 4" In length and that means big bucks when selling.

ADC had a video of skinning coon on here. I'm not 100% sure, but I thought it was in the archeives. It was done to show his skinning machine, so try looking for that. I'll see if I can find a link...

Learned that the hard way. I did the opening cut like Beav said. The fur buyer I sold to should me the correct way to do it just like posted above.

If your cutting from ankle to anus you are losing 3" to 4" In length and that means big bucks when selling. That's what I thought. It also makes it nearly impossible to get the back to finish off square. It makes the body look shorter and the hind legs look longer the way I've been doing it.

Perfect!! Now I see exactly what I need to do and also what I've been doing wrong for several years. That video answered every question I could have had. Thanks again for all the help!

The MONEY cut Is what we have been trying to explaine It has nothing to do with the window. In fact If your coon Is skinned correctly and pinned to your board correctly the window pretty much takes care of It's self. A little trimming up near the top to get the slack fur removed and your good to go.
