They're heavier, so if you run a shallow river like I do, you won't like the extra weight on the rear.

They're better on gas compared to older two strokes that don't have oil injection. For Lake or a fairly deep river, the 4 stroke is the way to go but for shallow river where a couple inches of draft counts, 2 stroke is best.

I have an OMC (non-ficht) 4 stroke for years. I love it. Quiet compared to a 2 stroke , no smoke and much smoother. As a boating friend commented on it when I first got it , he called it a 'bolt-on sterndrive'

Plus way cheaper fuel costs. When you think about it , adding 2 stroke oil to your gas adds .30-.50 to each gallon of fuel. That adds up quick. Doing the 4 stroke oil&filter change , cost is minimal.

I have the 20 hp Merc 4stroke EFI w/power trim/tilt on a 14' Lund boat. Great combo - love the Motor. Has the "Big" tiller type handle & the EFI is a dream.

What does a motor like that cost?

I bought a 15 horse Merc. 4 stroke a couple years ago and love it. Got a tiller handle and ambidextrous controlls. Being left handed I always wanted opposite controls. tiller handle swings to other side and throttle can be adjusted to turn the other way. I paid a little over $2,000 for it with a tank and gas line at Cabela's

Sorry don't remember - the Boat (SSV Model), trailer and Motor were just under 10 K, three years ago. Bob

Went to Stokley's marine Saturday and bought a mercury 20hp 4 stroke EFI. They had them in stock. It was $3500 plus tax. It is not terribly heavy. Spec says it weighs 99 pound. Haven't had it out yet tho

Buy the largest 4 stroke motor that your boat is rated at for best performance. I have a 90 HP Mercury 4 stroke on my 1650 Crestliner Fishhawk. Change motor oil and lower unit gear oil every fall. Runs great.
