if you do the correct size nut , a 1/2-13 fits over 3/8 and leave 1/4 inch of bar sticking up above the nut you don't need to weld just beat the nut down from the side squeezing it into the rebar like you would a annealed nut as a stop on a cable
5/8 nuts for half inch rebar
you could toss some nuts in fire and anneal them I never needed to, just cheap zinc plated nuts from the bulk hardware bib by weight and hammer them when on the rebar
if you leave that 3/16 to 1/4 inch above the nut it will mushroom right over as you pound them in even more securing the connection then open the claw up on a hammer with the angle grinder so that you can get under the nut and pull , makes good ne weld stakes , if you have a welder it makes even nicer stakes but cost and tooling this is a cheap option
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

If you pound in T stakes and you hit one side then the other, eventually they will all break. Some people weld them on the sides but still they will break off if you hit the cross piece. Same principal as bending a wire back and forth until it snaps. I highly suggest a nut welded to the stake over a T-handle. T-handles IMO are only good for water sets where most all the time you can just push them into the ground. On dry land the T serves to help critters spin the stake loosening it and often raising it enough to either pull out or cause entanglement stopping the chains swivels. ^^^ x2

Depends on who is doing the welding.

Depends on who is doing the welding. No it doesn't. It's called metal fatigue you can only bend it back and forth so many times.

BS I have Tbar stakes that I made and they are over 20 years old and haven't had one fail yet. Yes the horizontal bar may have been bent but I have never had a weld fail.

I have some older than that that haven't broke yet either but I'm not hammering them into dry ground over and over and I bet you're not yours either.

Most Boughten T bar stakes are welded on the 2 faces when they should be welded In the Jcts where the T and the stake meet. Or with a bead run all the way around. But then they would cost a lot more.
