Anyone on here have experience with the 17 WSM? I do not have any rifle primers to reload for my 204 and 223. Have anyone ever used these on fur animals? I just ordered one today as they have quite a bit of ammo for this caliber at our store. I have purchased a few boxes and will probably buy a few more after next pay day. I ordered the savage b mag model. I will probably put low powered leupold or vortex scope on it. Will have it ready for next year, maybe try it out this spring. I will have enough 204 and 223 ammo for this year and next year. Just getting the 17 wsm in case I am not able to find rifle primers to reload with. Mainly I would like to know if it is fur friendly. Thanks!

Fool...
Yes I picked one up year and a half ago. I like shooting it. I find it to be fur friendly.
I bought a savage as well, scoped it up. You may have to sort thru the ammo, mine has a taste for the heavier 25 grain rounds and shoots them much more accurately than the 20 grains.
Speaking of ammo, only one company actually produces it. I have not had a box of 50 that I recall which did not have a dud in it. Never more than two per box. I think the quality control is poor at the step where they spin the firing powder into that long casing before the main powder. Point being it’s not the gun.
I’ve had two cats with it no problems for fur, and I’ve now shot coyotes stretching it out, no problems. I would not hesitate to shoot a wolf out to maybe 200 or better if I knew I could stay back of the shoulder.

Awesome! I will probably use it for fur once I get it then. I have bought about 4 boxes of the 20 grain, I will stock up on the 25 grains too. I have a savage a17 and will sight it in. Got a wolf Saturday with my 204, sights were off, so I put the scope on my 17 hmr and will sight it in lunch time. I will more than likely get the b mag next week.

I HAVE USED THE 17 HMR ON ENOUGH GAME THAT WERE IN TRAPS. I SHOT THEM FROM DIFFERENT DISTANCES TO FIND OUT. WHAT THEY WOULD DO. ALTHOUGH THEY WILL KILL COYOTES WITH SIDE TO SIDE LUNG SHOTS THEY ARE NOT GREAT AT KILLING VERY QUICKLY AND IF I HIT THE SHOULDER BLADE OR WERE SHOT STRAIGHT ON THROUGH THE CHEST SELDOM DID THEY PENETRATE. COMPARED TO THE .22 RFM THE .17s WERE PRETTY INEFFICIANT AND IN MY OPINION VERY POOR FOR COYOTE SIZE GAME I WOULD NOT USE THEM ON ANYTHING BIGGER THAN A SMALL FOX. THAT IS PRETTY MUCH MY OPINION ON THEM ON GAME.
OFF THE BENCH THEY ARE HORRIBLE IN THE WIND. ON A CALM DAY THEY ARE GOOD FOR GROUND SQUIRRELS OUT TO ABOUT 150 YARDS IF NOT HEAD OR NECK SHOT MOST ROCK CHUCKS GOT BACK DOWN THEIR HOLE.

I've had a 17 wsm for a few years now. 20 grain bullets shot the best so that is what I stocked up on and use. Broadside chest shots on coyotes have resulted in dead coyotes but they have run 60-70 yards, similar to archery deer without the blood trail. Frontal neck shot (one) was instantaneous. Coon and similar have been instantaneous also, though I usually shoot for the neck area on them. Squirrels are messy.

I started keeping my dogs in my truck for retrieval when night hunting. The 17 wsm suppresses nicely. I'm currently looking at 19 and smaller 20 caliber options for the sweet spot for my hunting style-something fairly flat shooting within 250 yards, suppresses well, doesn't destroy fox , and a bit more power/penetration for coyotes.

I have a 204 ar, I liked it for hunting, a little tough on thicker skin animals like wolverine. When bone is hit it make a big hole. Wolves it works just fine, a small hole and no exit. I use 223 as well, will try out the 17 wsm for animals. I have used the 204 on fox and it does fine on them.

The 17 wsm arrived yesterday, will pick up from the store and see about sighting and breaking in the barrel after work. Will hope to use this weekend, if not will need to wait for a new rig. Currently my 2020 Expedition 600 ace is out of commission. Rig turned off on me, thought it would be the oil and filter so changed them. Still wont start, rig back fires when trying to start. Going to see about getting it to Nome wilderness to get worked on.
