Since we are being political correct, it looks like we will have to change the names of places such as Squaw Valley Resort in California and Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri. Too late! Already done.

the politically correct police are like the gun control thugs. no way to really appease them so quit worrying what will offend them.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Too late! Already done. Yep, just read about name changes. Sheesh, the PC police will not stop until we lose our national language. Maybe speaking Mandarin in the future.

Fifty years ago when I was a dumb insensitive kid I used that word in a derogatory manner in front of a young native fellow I went to school with. It cut him to the bone. It bothers me to this day when it crosses my mind.
You should look him up and apologize. Who knows, maybe he'll stroke your name off a list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oe04M3uHddY[/quote] Hahahaaaaa

many rivers are federal property within the high water marks and camping is allowed, you would need a good mobile camp. Fish and hunt/trap what is in season. You would need some supplies.....some foods/coffee for example. Canoe would be ideal....maybe a squaw...or two. Please don't use that term "squaw". This should be on the list of words that are unacceptable on this site. Friend of mine is Native American.I always call him Chief,,and it cracks him up.Dont be so sensitive Sally.

I saw a book once, think it was titled: "The Hermits of Idaho". Each chapter was on a different hermit. Quite a few lived in caves along the Snake or tributaries to the Snake.
I think they largely quality as living off the land.

Siwash and squaw are considered ethnic slurs in this day and age by many native Americans who are offended by their usage. This being a public forum I believe it would be for the best to avoid using them.

All the ball teams changed their names that had anything Indian in them.Come to find out ,it wasn't the Indians that it bothered. It bothered all the woke white folks.

I think they largely quality as living off the land. I believe the book you're referencing is "Idaho Loners" by Cort Conley. Good read. The dozen hermits that he profiles in the book, with only a couple of exceptions, are no longer living. That, in itself, should tell you something about coming to Idaho to be a "Mountain Man".

If the "end of times" does come around, and things like political boundaries and hunting/trapping regulations and seasons cease to matter, then the possible list where you could live the mountain man lifestyle becomes a whole lot longer... Although you will not hear me using ethnic slurs on here, or very likely any in-person conversations either...the irony of words "offending" anyone and that being cause for their being 'cancelled' is not lost on me. True (as in actual) Freedom of speech would include racial or ethnic slurs, too. Just saying.
