Since we are being political correct, it looks like we will have to change the names of places such as Squaw Valley Resort in California and Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in Missouri.

the politically correct police are like the gun control thugs. no way to really appease them so quit worrying what will offend them.

Yep, just read about name changes. Sheesh, the PC police will not stop until we lose our national language. Maybe speaking Mandarin in the future.

And that is if you can trap some and do some crafts for some cash or something similar like bartering. Very few want to do that. You should look him up and apologize. Who knows, maybe he'll stroke your name off a list.

Please don't use that term "squaw". This should be on the list of words that are unacceptable on this site.

I saw a book once, think it was titled: "The Hermits of Idaho". Each chapter was on a different hermit. Quite a few lived in caves along the Snake or tributaries to the Snake.

I think they largely quality as living off the land.

Siwash and squaw are considered ethnic slurs in this day and age by many native Americans who are offended by their usage. This being a public forum I believe it would be for the best to avoid using them.

I believe the book you're referencing is "Idaho Loners" by Cort Conley. Good read. The dozen hermits that he profiles in the book, with only a couple of exceptions, are no longer living. That, in itself, should tell you something about coming to Idaho to be a "Mountain Man".

Some interesting posts. I have no plans of doing it however it would just be nice to know that somewhere in the world a person could live about as free as possible.

If the "end of times" does come around, and things like political boundaries and hunting/trapping regulations and seasons cease to matter, then the possible list where you could live the mountain man lifestyle becomes a whole lot longer... laugh

Although you will not hear me using ethnic slurs on here, or very likely any in-person conversations either...the irony of words "offending" anyone and that being cause for their being 'cancelled' is not lost on me. True (as in actual) Freedom of speech would include racial or ethnic slurs, too. Just saying.
