Was recently passed down a 1958 lionel model train set. Plugged it in, and hooked it up, runs like a dream. It's got 7 cars all in original boxes in good shape. I know nothing about them. Any value to collectors? And food resources for learning more? It's really cool. And I'm having as much fun as my son is.

Sold a set box and all plus coal for that car for 275.00 a few years ago. Same age set up.

There are several sites on the web about trains including the National Model RR association. Trains.com ( Model Railroader magazine) Model RR Craftsman. Classic model trtains magazine. Probably a lionel collecters site as well. Most hobby shops will sell a copy of a price guide for Lionel trains and maybe your library has a copy. Sounds like you and your son are hooked on model railroading as a part time hobby. Have fun.

That Set could be worth a Couple good Deer rifles.
The value is in the Whole set
Or The Engine.

Make sure and don't take a Dealers offer right away.

I have O guage trains from Atlas and Lionel with TMCC. I run Atlas 3 rail track and switches. Had a layout up in the past...but now put away in boxes. Got plans for an “ L” shaped layout 12x14... maybe next year. Love weathering the freight cars and buildings. But I do have an old lionel under the Christmas tree as we speak. [Linked Image]
