Every year I take 2 weeks off strictly for trapping and deer hunting. The trapping has been way better than expected and to be honest normally in the past I’m calling it a season by now. My problem is I have gotten an extra itch to take more coyotes. I’m strictly a dirt hole guy and this year have lived and probably died by using only fresh deer liver. For 9 days now my traps have gone stagnant. What are some tips and tricks to the later season coyotes? I use mb 550s and mb 650s with peat moss in the bed and homemade wax dirt. Most locations are open fields, waterways and CRP sections. What can I do different? So far 14 coyotes and 5 fox but something inside me says don’t stop now lol. Thanks for the help!!

Is it possible you’ve taken the majority of the critters where you are trapping?
Another downside was the moon the past week or so.
I have about 4-5 properties I trap every year. They only hold so many critters, so it starts off hot then fizzles out after a couple of weeks.

Has gun season happened yet in your state? Things kinda slow down a few weeks after the orange hats go through

Ya the 7 day firearm season is over and this Friday,Saturday and Sunday is the muzzleloader season. So I’m sure that doesn’t help, I know there’s more coyotes cause I hear them at night and have seen them on my way into work. Another thing I forgot to mention is, I usually just use bait and urine. Never dabbled with the call lures much, but like I said before usually I’m calling it quits by now.

I’d say a combination of things. Deer season, coyote density and weather. Don’t get discharged if you don’t have a lot of ground to set on. After the locals are removed it will take a few day for the transient dogs to move in. A good push of cold air will probably help you out. IMHO

The weather here seems to be my biggest factor. Right now with 50 to 40 degree highs during the day nothing is moving. I am fairly confident once another cold front moves through things will pick up again. I shouldn't be able to trap in a short sleeve shirt in ND in december.

Same here. I have to keep a towel in my back pocket to keep the sweat off of me the last couple days. Crazy

Have you moved your sets? I’ve had hot areas go cold, only to find out (once it snowed) that the coyotes had seen enough of their kin taken in an area to skirt around it. Are you using cameras? I have a field edge travel route that was hot earlier this year. My cell phone trail camera is pretty reliable. Today is day 12 without a coyote using that travel route. If I didn’t have my camera in the area, I’d think for sure that I was doing something wrong or needed to change things up. I’d be right! I need to pull those traps lol!

Don’t quit. Yote season is about to get better. Once all the easy pickings of deer season are over they have to actually hunt for a living. The only negative from now on are weather and night hunters. Late dec and Jan are some of the best yote trapping imo.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

I have a new place that looked extremely hot two weeks ago on a trail to a dead pile. Looked like a freeway so made several sets far enough away from the pile. Blowing snow froze in my leg holds but the snares where still operational. 10 days and no new sign. The only thing I can think of was some night hunters where there a few nights before but doubt they cleaned them all out. Have to pull tomorrow but thought I would he filling the truck with coyotes with all that sign. All part of the game I guess.
