I recently had a customer contact me about wanting to run Wolf Ram power snares in Wyoming on his wolf line. His concern was making them legal with a break away device. From the factory they do not come with any device and I wasn't able to find much information on them. We decided to just buy a few and try them out.

the factory snares themselves can be taken apart and a BAD added really easily. One thing to note is that you do need to have the 90 degree BADS and not the flat ones. the installation was never really the concern though. The big concern was when the ram hits the end of the snare will it hit with enough force to break down a break away thus making the system useless. Without being able to find the information on the hitting strength of the ram it was up to testing to decide if it worked or not. We tested a half dozen snares hits and at no time did we have a break away device fail.

Just to throw out there on top of everything else. the springs on these things are for real and you need to be careful when using them. It is very hard to set them without either putting your face or your franks and beans in the glide path of the huge spring going off. Just a safety disclosure.

Here’s a picture

Wolf rams hit hard but the breakaway will be fine

There is a couple different ways to set rams safely. There’s a few utube videos but I don’t know how to post them and haven’t looked at one for years

I'm not sure a BAD would be of any use on a power snare.

What are you thinking Beav? Functionally they do break away at the weight they should. Maybe you are thinking that with a ram spring nothing caught properly would have the ability to break anything? I wonder about that i suppose. The main concern of myself and the customer is the legality in the state of use and making sure it complied with everything.

They are of no use........unless the law requires it
Properly made ram snares have a breakaway built into the loop with the ferrule. Have had many non-target animals break the snare and just keep going. Rams are the best snare out there but are expensive to buy.

They are required by law where they are being used. I really like the setup on them and they are lights out for sure. This was a fun little project for me to learn more on something i had only seen on youtube channels.
