Bought a used 16 ft boat, looking for a decent fish finder up to $400. What’s good bad etc.

Garmin or humming bird works well for me and easy to use. Make sure you know what your buying and how to operate them if not your wasting money. 90 percent of what I use mine for is depth structure and water temp.

With GPS if you can. Nice marking spots.

My vote is for Garmin

I got the echo map 95 sv this spring, and it is excellent. The side scan, clear vu, and regular sonar all work great.

Same for the chart plotter.

I bought a 4" Lowrance hook 4 on sale before that and the chart plotter and topo maps never worked right at all.

Now I only use it as an ice fishing sonar, which it does work well at.

Essential for our picky lake trout

I have a Helix 5 with GPS. Good unit for the money.

I've got a pretty high end Lowrance chart plotter and sonar unit. But, it's older and doesn't have a lot of the newer features. I've been drooling over side scan units for a while. I wouldn't buy new without getting something that can see out to the sides. My sonar has a narrow cone. In 20' of water, I'm probably looking at a piece of bottom that's less than 10' wide. Sidescan, and similar technology with different names, can see an area 200' wide.

I don't know if that's possible at a $400 price point or not.
