I’m sure I’m beating a dead horse but anyways here it goes , maybe someone can point me in the right direction. So I got on YouTube to look up some ideas about how to tan hides, both , for wall hangers and to possibly make something out of . The problem is I get confused on what needs to be done and what doesn’t . Some videos I see , only use salt and a salt bath then the tanning oil . Some only use a pickle and then tanning oil, and some do both. So my question is what is the best method to preserve the hide before the tanning oil is applied and the breaking process starts? These hides are currently frozen , they will be unthawed and fleshed and ready to start the process at that point .

Boco gave a step by step tutorial on it a few months ago. Next time I tan something I'm going to follow to. The beavers he did seemed to come out really well. I have used the Rittles EZ-100 kit in the past with good results, and would recommend it. Tanning can be very time consuming and very difficult to get the leather as soft as a commercial tannery does.
