Well everyone get ready for a cold winter. The coon size this year great so far. The amount of fat on these coon is like I have never seen before. My smallest coon so far is 22.5 pounds and the largest is 30 pounder. Out of the seven so far the smallest was a female. I only set coon catchers which is a DP. Some coon catchers I dig a three inch hole and shove it in to the top plate and the bottom is open. The other style has a full door opening and has a u shaped anchor but then again you still need to use chain and stake to anchor. So these coon should come out as 4x or 5x all depends on how bad I flesh them. So what is everyone else coming up with, these are MN coon along the Mississippi valleys.

Or your lack of small coon could be due to disease the smaller weaker coon are more susceptible to dieing from diseases. On years where distemper hits you will catch less coon but have good size in my opinion.

How large of a sample have you collected? 22+lbs on an accurate scale is a pretty big coon. Sometimes weight doesn't translate into length though. There are short fat coons same as long skinny coons.

I have a platform scale that they used at feed mills, I weight every animal I catch. So far only seven coon and only the one female. Have not seen many road kills. Farther away my my area then I have seen small coon on the highway. i do not expect very many additional coon and plus I am pulling traps maybe Wed.

Now that you mentioned it we had a coon come in the yard and lay down then get up and stager and lay down again. It was stagering all over the place so we ended it for him. That might be why we only seem to have larger coon and just boars.

Could be that with coon harvest down at least last year, if not several years in a row, more of your coon have lived to be 2 and 3 year olds.
