I’m looking for advice on setting up a manual winch for fur shed/deer butchering duties. I’m picturing mounting a crank like pictured below to my work bench, but can see several problems with this set up. Is there a better way to set up a winch like this?

Don't go with that model. Way to slow. I tried it and tossed it the first season. I have mine lag bolted to a 6×6 thats part of the shop. Mine is vertical and about 14ft up with a pulley bolted through a hanger I built. Went with a regular manual boat style winch and much happier. Hopefully in the future I can get an electric one. Sorry no pics but gone for the next week working. Jon

I went with a boat winch that cranks up and or down, when you stop going up it will not back turn unless you turn it back. Cost about $50.00 at Fleet Farm. My skinning machine is this winch and we have used it on deer. My ceiling is 11 feet.

Save your money and buy an electric hoist. That winch is going to cost as much as half of the cost of the hoist. https://smile.amazon.com/Happybuy-E...=880+hoist&qid=1599790969&sr=8-9 That one will easily lift any deer. The 440 model like come on skinning machines will only be about $85 shipped to you and they will lift deer too.

I use a boat wench for my skinning machine. In the fall I throw the strap over the meat pole. I can pick up a bull elk with a 1500 lb boat wench. I like it for skinning because I can feel the tension as I apply pressure. Can't feel that with an electric wench.

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

For deer, I use a boat winch bolted to a short 2x6 which I then clamp in my bench vise. This allows is to be removed and used as needed, freeing up valuable bench space. Send it up and over a pulley for a smooth pull with a bit of mechanical advantage.

I reckon this could be done with a winch as well.
