I learned I had pretty bad arthritis in my right shoulder a few years ago. After a few years I’m nearing the decision to have shoulder replacement surgery. Can’t drive for weeks and a 6 month recovery period. Big question if any of you have had the surgery, how is my coyote trapping going to be affected? Would you do it again? Thanks

If you need it you need it- there will still be plenty of coyotes when you get better

My Dad had his replaced. You will want to do exactly what the Doctor says. You can mess the surgery up really easy and they can't fix it back at least that's what his doctor told us. Slow recovery time and a lot of therapy.

JKS, I am in the same situation with my right shoulder. Bone on bone. My family doctor told me when it comes to shoulder replacement I better get the best doctor available and it is a long healing process. I have been holding off over 5 years now.

I've had both done.
The ball only.
At this late date you probably shouldn't go trapping.
You will find that you do not have the strength you had but the pain will not be there.
I can do most everything but I don't have much control of over my head.
muscle has to be cut to get to the joint.
Any questions please pm me.

I had a consultation for shoulder replacement, was advised that depending on level of damage could be a "regular" or reverse replacement...Doc claimed beside the long recovery, lifting more then 20#, was a no go, no running a lawn mower or snow blower for months, less mobility then a natural shoulder, and absolutely no recoil from rifle or shotgun...that trying to fix a messed up replacement was not a good outcome.
About the only good thing was your pain would be gone, eventually,..maybe...

I'll wait for the darn thing to fall off on it's own before I buy into all that.

My neighbor has had his shoulder done. The other one is due soon. He is almost 80yo. Worked very hard his whole life , still does.

I've seen lots of people who have had their shoulders or hips redone.

The hips getting redone are usually from being obese and carrying all that extra weight.
The shoulders getting redone is usually from wearing them out due to hard work.

I think getting your shoulder redone is almost a badge of honor.
Getting your hips redone is a badge of shame for being lazy and eating too much.

Cragar - your generalization about hip replacement folks is uncalled for and not true.

I had bi lateral hip replacement, I'm not obese, they were worn out, just like my knees, shoulders, and other joints, through heavy work and arthritis... while I was in the hospital and rehab, NO other hip replacement patients were obese, So, that statement was..shall we say..ignorant

I'm 6' and just short of 200 pounds.
I weighed 185 and 6'1" when my hips ( yes both hips ) were replaced.
Obese???
I Think not.
Arthritis and hard work like roofing and seamless gutter installation. I'll agree with.

Getting your hips redone is a badge of shame for being lazy and eating too much.

Making a statement like that is usually a sign of being full of crap.

I've had four rotator surgeries all for full tears. I have a friend with two shoulder replacements. I hear the rehab is not as bad for the replacement, but it's got to hurt cause it is a shoulder. Do the rehab and it will be OK in a few months. Avoid truck and Diesel batteries.

I respectfully disagree. Most medical professionals would agree with obesity is a big factor in hip/knee replacement.

Osteoarthritis can be caused by many factors
Age
Gender
Race
Prior injuries
Heredity
Weight

You can't change your age, gender, race, heredity or erase prior injuries but you can change your weight.

Take a 1/2 ton pickup , put 1 ton plus in it and use it for towing or snow plowing. Very quickly it will wear out the suspension, shocks , brakes and transmission.

You can't change a trucks age ,brand, quality of manufacture or drive it with damage from an accident and expect it to perform perfectly with a heavy load.

I've had both knees done bone on bone and a major tear in the Mencius. I had my right hip done due to the ball dying. It had to be done.
Obese? No not even close.
Arthritis in most of my joints from hard work, sports and age.

Don't believe half of what you say Cragar.

Friend just had a hip replacement. She is in her 70's and was bone on bone and is very small and probably under weight.

my dad had it done , in 2016 it took him a good year to be right again but it is better now and he is still glad he had it done it was bone on bone for a long time.

he had his hip done last year and his recovery with that was much faster

mom had a knee done this spring and is doing very well and is having the other done this fall.

dad just wore his out , he drove for UPS for a lot of years in and out of that truck takes a toll on the body he was 185 and 6'2" back then he is about 195 now. he used to be able to eat anything and never gain a pound just run it off the next day.
