When they get a job they can buy one and pay the bill themselves. Not necessarily. Nightlife is right Depends on the kids and their activities ESPECIALLY with all the kooks in our world nowadays. Ours volunteered at the NC Zoo animal rehab at 14 so we got her 1 then. By 17 she was working some as seamstress/alterations and paid 1/2 of her bill. The family joke was she helped them release critters back into the wild and Daddy got a call to trap them and euthanize them. Since ADC guys can’t relocate wildlife......but the Zoo can. Lol

My youngest who is 20 now got one at 12. He started working at the local diner and was driving the atv back and forth. Come to think of it he is still on my bill. For everyone that says I got by without one so my kids don’t need one I’ll bet you had things as a kid that your parents didn’t.
Looks like he needs another year;-)

A dumb phone for emergencies, maybe depending on the individual. A smart phone, never! I don't want a family of smart phone zombies!

Bunch of grouchy old curmudgeons. Glad I'm not your kid. lol I suppose, I didn't feel my kids needed phones at a young age, of course when most of my kids were young cell phones were just becoming common among teens. This nonsense of kids that are 10 or 12 needing a smartphone is just nonsense. Social media has done more to harm teens, especially teen girls, than the convenience factor of phones has given the parents.

What will benefit the kid the most is not having the sense of entitlement that just because their friends have it they need it.
What does it cost to have an iphone, 700 to a 1000 bucks a year?

The social media thing is out. That crap just isn't gonna happen. I do like the idea of them only being able to call and receive calls from predetermined numbers. I was thinking more on the lines of them being able to keep in contact with their friends. That seems to be the thing now.
I still have a few years before I hit the big 40 mark. No cell phone and if I need to talk to you there is a good chance that I will just stop over to your place to bs. I really hate making phone calls. I would much rather talk to you face to face.
Getting There - I agree 100%. But I also realize that they are here to stay. I do not want to put my kids at a disadvantage.

What does it cost to have an iphone, 700 to a 1000 bucks a year? First you purchase a phone. Used can be 200 or less. New, 1000 or more depending on the model. Then you need a phone plan. That can be as low as 30/40 a month or over 100 a month. Depends on what all you want, can afford. Even a phone plan for a flip phone will run over 30 a month I bet.

For what real benefit. That's 360 a year that could be put into something that one can get a return out of.

They have tablets and computers at school that keep them up with things. No phone for my kid and very limited time on video games. We make him play outside. Running around with friends, building forts, playing baseball. Living real life. To me a phone will hold him back. All these kids texting instead of talking and the list goes on and on. Phones are more a problem at that age than a benefit.

ours got regular cell phones when they were 13.
rule number one - this is so that you can communicate with your parents, first and foremost. talking to friends is just a bonus. when we call or text, you answer 2 - if it has a password, we have to know what it is and we can take your phone at any time to review anything we want to. 3 - break rule one or two and you will lose the phone and there will be other disciplines, as well, that fit the 'crime'
mostly it helps when they have after school activities or stay with a friend or go away to camp, etc. and we need to let them know something or they need to let us know something.

Bunch of grouchy old curmudgeons. Glad I'm not your kid. lol I'm not even 40 and I think kids with cell phones are bad...... if you knew half of the stuff kids are doing with those phones it would make you sick. Not to mention they are complete zombies with their phone. Take a teenager's phone away for a couple days and you will see an emotional monster you didn't know you lived with.

my kids had tablets or old phones that had no plan earlier but Freshman year of High school all of my kids got phones.
even though the principal rants for half of freshman orientation about cell phones (same miss spelled power point for the last 4 years reused uncorrected and half of it irrelevant now) . must be locked in lockers and turned off. day 1 of school all the teachers tell the kids what apps they want loaded on the phones for class.
they use several quiz programs and other search apps
so a few weeks before high school starts.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
