I think the Swiss are probably just as bad. I had a friend who moved to Geneva for a couple of years. He noticed that in the apartment complex he lived in everyone had geraniums in their widow planter boxes. So, he went to the market, got some geraniums and put them in his window planter. A couple of days later the police were knocking on his door. His offence? Planting geraniums that were the wrong shade or red as mandated by the authorities. This is a true story, happened in the late 70's or early 80's. Funny you should mention that. My wife and I befriended a young german couple about 20 years ago and they wanted to see more of Oregon before why went back home to Germany. So I gave them a proposed tour route through eastern Oregon. When they came back they commented that they were amazed to see cattle of different colors all grazing in the same field. They said that in Germany one would never see that as they would all be the same color in each pasture.

"everything was fine, and then the Germans moved in with all their rules and regulations". What has always amused me is that not only do they think they need to follow their own rules and regulations, but everyone else should also. HEY, NOW! *I'M* of German ancestry and I'm not a Democrat!

I am married to a 100% German and inherited her family as well. When one reads the histories of settlement of North America by various ethnic groups, this common thread appears "everything was fine, and then the Germans moved in with all their rules and regulations". What has always amused me is that not only do they think they need to follow their own rules and regulations, but everyone else should also. Lol, you could say that about any person or nationality. I married Polish/Russian. Her family is crazy.
No Jab.

About 100% German here I think. My great grandfather on my fathers side came over on the boat when my grandfather Ludwig was 2 years old. My grandmother on my mothers side maiden name was Schmidt, but they changed it to Smith when they got to America so folks would not think they were German. Funny part is my mother's maiden name was Zimmerman (no relation,.... or maybe that is the reason I am like this) so when she married my dad she did not have to change her last name. I can not tell you how many times as a young feller when you had to fill out a form that asked "mothers maiden name" that I was considered a buffoon and told to do it over. Zim

Zim When I lived in the city I used to buy fishing bait from a bait shop/gas station called Zimmerman's. You got any kin down this way Zim?

I am of German heritage. I once worked in the engineering office of a Swiss company that had just acquired a German company. The office comprised approx.: - 10 Swiss engineers
- 10 German engineers
- Me and two other American engineers
- A Swiss Division Manager
- A German Assistant Division Manager
In my opinion that office was no more anal, organized, or structured than any other office I ever worked in. In fact, in some ways it might have even been a little sloppier.

I am of German and Swiss plus a bit of English ancestry. I will answer your questions.
In what stereotypic mold do Germans fit?
Any that we determine to be best.
What is it about Germans that make them behave like that?
Strong observation and attention to detail as it relates to the larger picture. Unrelenting determination along with refusal to give up

If I don't know an area but see a butcher shop with a German name I always plan for quality meat selection, cutting, and sometimes even aging. If So TX has taught me anything it is to not fear the Polish butchers either- they take some pride in anything they sell.
When I am working in the north east I learned to seek out the Portuguese diners. Wow, if I shang hi'd one of them ol girls back to home with me Id weigh 400 pounds.
I guess what I am saying is taking a little pride in what you do is something I admire and try to reward with my purchases. FnT or MB- both blow me away any time I order.

My very first deer was gutted and dragged out of the woods as best a 15 year old could, then inexpertly skinned and taken to our local german meat cutter. I learned a bunch of bad german words that day. I do remember him saying "By Gott!! Dat's ta first time I had to putz on my bifocals to cut up a deer". You never bring me no deer like dat again! You clean it up first!"
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
