I watched “Market to Market” yesterday and they had a segment about the meat situation. They said there was a billion+ pounds of red meat in the freezers along with a billion+ pounds of chicken. They also said there is 7% more meat in the chain.
The only good news was that the margins the packer is getting is going up if that’s good news.
This program was on Iowa Public TV. Worth watching. That's not good news. Packers have been making between 400-700 dollars PROFIT PER HEAD that they slaughter. Ranchers selling cattle at a loss FOR YEARS and all of the chicken and pork producers run on contracts meaning they have been vertically integrated and are owned by the packers already. The packers have monopolized and control the meat market. This meat shortage is because only 4 companies slaughter most of Americas meat in a limited number of gigantic plants. If we had smaller packing houses scattered across the country as it used to be about 3-4 generations ago there wouldn't be a meat shortage. If workers at one plant got sick it would have negligible impact on the meat supply. Most of those comodity traders on Market to Market are what I call "educated idiots." They have no clue and should not be on television.

I've often said anybody that wants to eat meat should be required to kill and butcher it themselves...........but then there wouldn't be much meat consumed..
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

Because local can't offer economy of scale pricing to the public while meeting (or buying off) federal and state regulation. The only way to break the system is direct to consumer sales without the burden of regulation.

I agree It wouldn't stop me from eating meat but I am not normal either. been killing and eating meat since I got my first bow about 9yo neighbor showed me how to skin my first squirrel (dad drove truck and was at work)
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

When I was coming up it was a contest to take a rabbit break it's neck and have it skinned and gutted before the heart stopped beating. That and dad chopping heads off chickens giving it a toss and pointing to child saying catch it when it's quits flopping. Cool thing about a rabbit is you can do every bit of that with your bare hands, providing you have at least one good fingernail.

Not sure about the whole meat shortage thing going on. I just picked up 20 lbs of Boston butts for 97 cents a pound. Not sure if I could feed or butcher one for that. There was no limit either, and the shelf was packed full. Freezer is already stuffed, but for that price I packed a little more in. HEB is the giant TX grocery store chain and they still have .99 / pound thighs, quarters, wings, or drum sticks already seasoned.
Things are weird right now- who knows what will happen but yeah, you wont raise, butcher, and package much for 97 or 99 cents unless you let pigs eat corn out of fresh cow poop (don't laugh- it used to be a thing)

Had post with a board nailed to it, the board had spaced nails to pin the back feet on. Pin, ring the ankles, cut across and pull. Peeled easier than a banana.
