Can anyone give advice on seines? I am wanting a 50’x6’ deep seine to get small bullheads out of my ponds. It is loaded with 3-6” bullheads.
Looking in Memphis net & twine catalog, a knotted seine (856) #9 3/4” sq 1-1/2” str. 6’ 64 md $3.84/ft. What does 1 1/2” str mean and 64 md mean? Is #9 heavy enough line?Any advice will be appreciated!

Good luck with that. I tried it and could never get rid of them. I also made a fish trap and it worked okay but too many bullheads. Ended up killing off everything and when they all floated to the top there must have been 3,000 of them in a little 1/2 acre pond. Pour walnut juice in the pond or shock it and dip net them out.

Just passin through

I 1/2 stretched IS 3/4" square, each bar of the mesh is about 3/4", stretch the mesh straight and it's 1 1/2". MD is meshes deep, or up and down, in this case 64md equals about 6'. #9 twine should be heavy enough.

How deep is the pond? 6' might be a little short of depth.

The horns on bullheads get hung up badly in a seine too. I'd do a complete kill and start over.

might also need to go with a finer mesh, instead of getting hung up you can roll them out.

Was wanting to sell the bullheads to catfishermen for bait. Thanks for all the replies. I think I need smaller mesh if it stretches double. And yes I need a baitfish license to sell

If you want to get rid of the bullheads put a big snapping turtle in the pond.

Smaller mesh would make it easier to to roll the bullheads out without too many hanging up. A smaller meshed net will be a LOT harder to pull though especially 50' X6' IMO.

That is a good idea. You'd find the fish traps that Wickencamp's sells are great for bullheads. Better than trying to seine them in my experiance.

I'm telling you fellows if you shock that pond all of the fish will float up stunned and you can scoop what you want to up with a dip net and leave the fish you don't want. After a few minutes the stunned fish go back to normal.

Heres a good video for yall

a fish trap or ten made from 1/4 inch galvanized hail screen. buy a 4 foot by 25 foot roll. tie it all together with baling wire. make a cylinder. make two cones. cones are about 1 1/2 inch at the small end. small ends go inside the cylinder big end tied to the open end of the cylinder. cut a square hole in the cylinder. tie the piece you removed back in with wire. thats the door. fill an old sock half full of bread or oatmeal and tie it inside. fasten a line to it for retrieval and toss it in the pond. they only last a couple months or so but they are cheap and work very well

He's not trying to catch them all out, he's just trying to get a bunch to sell. I don't suppose he could even get a boat like that to his pond, if its like most every other ponds I see in Iowa.

I can't imagine picking all the bullheads stuck in a 50' seine.

Try picking sea robins out of 1200' gillnet.....

traps will work, but build big ones, big as you can handle, 4'x 18" should fill up nicely, , your gonna need something heavier then 1/4" hardware cloth.make sure you ate your cheerios that morning... cool
