Another marvel of common core math. If you cant get the all kids up to the same level, you make it so convoluted that it brings them all down to the same level. A simple 2 step multiplication problem turned into a confusing convoluted 4 step problem. Heres a video showing how my 4th grade daughter is being taught to do 2 digit by 2 digit multiplication problems.

Wow she had me lost from the get go but I knew the answer in 5 seconds just doing in my head. Don’t think I was taught this but sometime long ago I found my way to multiply. I took 13 and made it 10 and times it with 12 then took the 3 and times it by 12. Add them together is 156 but I did it in my head

My response after watching the video to see how they did it, was this is absolutely ignorant. People who are in favor of common core math, try to tell me that the reason I have an issue with it is just because it is different than the way I was taught. Nope, my issue is that is over complicating simple problems and an outright ignorant way to teach math.

yup im in highschool, and ever since i was in elementary it wasn't allowed to do any work in your head. I always did it in my head. only had one teacher ever really like me that encouraged that. now i just stick with a calculator and write it all down. no point in having a bad grade for getting the right answer.

You can still do it in your head, you just have to waste time drawing everything out. If you're good with a TI 83+ programming, you can make some money writing a program that spits out the SAW part. Never sold mine because I didn't want it known who wrote it. I had probably 600+ lines in that program for everything up to precalc.

I get it that for school work/tests that you shouldnt solve a math problem in your head. But as long as you show your work(and it makes sense not just jibberish) and you arrive at the correct answer then it should be perfectly acceptable. I just do not understand complicating simple things for the sake of bringing everyone down to the same level to make the school look better.

DRF, I think I read years ago that the way you described is the way the Japanese teach it in school. Most of the time I use the method that you do.

The new method also makes look stupid when the child asks for help. Another tool used by the socialists to alienate children from their parents.

It's a few extra steps to get to the same answer than the way we were taught. I don't see why it is so terrible.

I help my granddaughter with her common core math and there are a lot of good things I like about it. Many methods of common core are the same methods I use to figure problems in my head. Things like breaking multiplication and division problems down to the nearest multiples of ten and proceeding from there.

there was a thread about pet peeves not to long ago and I didn't think I had really any at the time now I understand I have one and it fits with math gripes so here it is

The inability for people to count back change.

say I am buying lunch I purchase a soda for 1.00 , an apple for 0.75 , a sandwich for 2.50 and bag of chips for 1.00 my lunch is 5.25 they seem to figure that part out fine addition apparently they got so when I hand them a 20 why is counting so darned hard.

5.25 is my total I hand them a 20 and the blank look starts

lay the 20 on the counter , say 5.25 my total then and a quarter and say 5.50 , add another quarter say 5.75 and one more quarter say 6 count out ones seven , eight , nine , ten , count out a 10 and say 20 now you are the same amount as the 20 laying on the counter and you have made change for a 20 and only had to count no subtraction at all. how hard is that?

equally frustrating us when they tell me my total at the drive thru is 8.35 I hand them a ten a quarter and a dime. they just got lost why did I do this to them they want to hand back the quarter and dime.

I teach math. There are many ways to teach it and many ways to learn it. Relying on one method or accepting only one method is foolish. Math literacy, like pretty much everything, starts at home. I’d begin teaching 13x12 with mental math, 13x10 and 13x2, I’d expect many kids to quickly know that without touching a pencil. The strong ones would nail it, some never will and other strategies would be needed. Did I say math literacy starts at home?

Greencountypete, I went to the landfill yesterday, bill was 1025. I handed here a 20, then said I’ll get a quarter. I handed her 2025, really messed her up. Guess that’s why she’s in a low end job.🥴

3togo that could be, I’m not sure if I was taught that way, I don’t remember much from school other then I couldn’t wait to be done with it lol. Just have done math in my head that way for a long time. I do remember barely passing algebra so I am far from a math expert.

Because it's unnecessary and doesn't teach anything of value. What doesn't add value is waste. It may be good for a certain type of person that needs style of learning.

My elementary school when I went through put value in speed and many of the tests had time limits so you learned quickly.

As a teacher, I find it ridiculous that people blame someone else for their own inadequacy as parents. Kids success in school is pretty much determined before they get there.
But hey, it’s easier to blame the system when your kid can’t read or count.
