What does everyone use? I’m looking for something wider for coon pelt scraping next fall. Even if it’s April, it’s never too early to start planning for next season...

A coon has three areas to flesh. The 2 edges and the middle. Start with one edge and PUSH off the fat turn and do the other edge and PUSH that fat off. Those outside edges are only about 4" to 5" wide. When your done with the edges rotate the hide so the center of the coon hide Is on your beam and use the sharp side to slice off this area. I don't see where a wider beam would be of any advantage. But no reason not to try It.

There Is no way I'm going to stand up with my arms over my head dragging a fleshing knife down the hide. Then once you get down to maybe chest level you will have to reposition the hide and start over. How do you keep that hide from sliding back down the beam? But trappers use them so they must work.

I flesh coon English style (vertical) as well I built my own beam and am now getting a pvc beam design finalized. The beam is designed to clamp the hide as you work.
Just happy to be here.

The beam above looks good, but I would never set one up that way. I flesh hides year around, and I want a very shallow angle. Don't want to bend over like a pretzel, my back say no way!
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Great point-That’s how I flesh them as well. I just thought after fleshing quite a few last year, there were times I was not making enough use of a single pass of the knife. I’ll try to get a picture of my set up on here. I use a Necker 600 for most, and swap to a caribou if I need a sharper knife

I'm in on this...I bought a couple of Lee's knives and the [essentially] flat 1 X 6 I was using wasn't conducive...NOT the Knives' fault! After suffering with a cheapie flesher for years I bought two of Lee's. Excellent knives but I still suck at fleshing. I'm a canine guy, 95% of my catch is red fox and they usually don't take much fleshing. I avoid coon like the plague and have gotten really good a NOT catching them. So I just don't get much experience at fleshing. One day I'll have PCR teach me how to flesh. Did you get the free pelter with your Steinmeyers?
Eh...wot?
