Curious Bob ... I have about a dozen or so tails that i did not have to turn in for bounty(normally they need to be turned in to the highways dept for proof so no care to preserve them was taken) that sat in the back of the truck and developed maggots. I kept them and put them in my bait freezer. If i thaw them and filet the leather off would they be suitable for making BTO or should i just stick with fresh tails ?

Guess I need to try another batch. Had a jar of beaver tail chunks and a jar of mullet in a milk crate sitting in one of my fields. Forgot about them when the river got up, they gone!
I may find them later but I doubt it

Fat tissue isn't a good food source for maggots. They will work on the attached tissue and scaly skin. I had some tails that had been in the freezer for a few years or more that I skinned out with the fresh tails. Cut them all up in smaller chunks and they all are working out with oil daily on and off the wood stove.
I would skin them out by fileting the skin off as you say and rinse them clean. Let them dry well and chunk them up. The smaller the pieces the faster they will begin to break down. Thanks Bob, i'm gonna give it a whirl when it starts to get a bit warmer here.

Great post Bob. I'm a novice and have never tried but plan to give a whirl. What do you use to strain the oil, cheesecloth or something similar, or do you get it out with a baster. I'd think some type of straining would be better to get pure oil without any sediment in it. Thanks Bob
