I have the 760 in 35 Remington. Very reliable and seldom need to Jack the pump, unless there’s 2 of em 😜

I've heard they are decent guns. I inherited a 7400 in 243. Its complete junk. 50 yards is about as far as I would trust it to print a 4 inch group. Cant reliably hit a basketball at 100. I avoid remington at all costs, but I've heard they make a decent gun, just havent seen or shot one

7400's are a totally different ball game. Most 7600's were pretty accurate and trouble free.

I like the earlier version the 760. Light, fast, and accurate. That is the same rifle that was used by the legendary Benoit family of Vermont.

the 7600 was a great gun , fast handy in the woods enough power , the carbine would make it even better.

the pump made it better than the 7400 and 742 and 740 because the semi autos ate them selves inside

Remington accuracy , my 742 in 30-06 is about a 1 1/2 inch gun at 100 yards in 1966 that really wasn't bad at all.

I am by no means a Remington fan boy the company had some great ideas they got 85% before they started shipping guns then failed to every fully correct.

the triggers aren't exactly super awesome around 4-5 pounds.
the barrels on early Rem 740, 742 and possibly 760 could loosen , they changed threads when they realized it.

some of the 740, 742 , 7400 accuracy issues can come from the hand-guard and how it is mounted and pressing on the barrel

my opinion the semi autos make a better short action gun than long action gun because you can't get enough powder in the short action cases typically to over gas them also why the 760 , 7600 last much longer.

if you own a 740 , 742 , 7400 even the 7500 keep them clean , clean the chamber a pull through bore snake and a little corrosion inhibitor I like hornady one shot dry lube after every time it gets damp I used to use a little clp or atf on a cotton patch that I had a bent copper wire made into a patch loop I could get in and lube and dry the chamber
the bent cleaning chamber rod with patch loop was one of Remington's first solutions to the problems I just didn't have the Remington provided one.

weaknesses , with no mag in the bolt holds closed , the chambers are some what prone to rust if you chamber gets rough you rip extractors off and eat the guides that the action bars run in

the gas system is not adjustable or compensating , when over gassed which is very easy to do the bolt over travels , the lugs over rotate and when it gets back to the end of tis travel the bolt locking lugs gauge into the reciver rigth were the action bars fit into the receiver.

if you look at a 740 or 742 in a shop used 90% chance it has bolt locking lugs marks in the inside of the reciver you can take the magazine out flip the gun over and with a flash light and the bolt helf back you can see the bolt lug pattern making tracks in the receiver this is hard on the bolt locking lugs and the action bar and reciver.
I believe the solution to this is only shoot M1 Garand safe ammo I run 44gr H4895 the Hornady tenth edition lists this as a M1 safe load with a 165 or 168gr bullet I run a speer 165 BTSP
my rifle used to toss 30-06 cases 20 feet now they are 5 feet in front of my right foot when shooting. the bolt no longer seems to over travel , it is smooth shooting light recoiling rifle now.

I see them int he shop used rack regular not uncommon to see a decent looking rifle with a mag that looks horrible no bluing left . the mags are not so easy to replace and were an integral part of the gun and of course the bolt lugs stamped int he rear of the receiver.

there are people who love an hate the 740, 742 7400 it often comes down to their use
short action owners are typically more happy with theirs
people who keep any rifle very clean and lubed
people who only ever shot Remington 30-06 core locks , the accuracy was so so but they were less likely to eat the action they have long been a M1 safe ammo.
people who shoot them very little and not in harsh conditions.
sub 150 yard shooters

the less pleased crowd likely loved them for their shotgun like fast handling and then got the big letdown that under hard use in inclement weather with less than stellar cleaning habits they didn't last very long
also anyone who shot a lot more then 500-700 round through it or hot rodded ammunition running book max or higher made for a very short lifespan.

I am running a vortex 2-7x32 on my 742 very fast handling and should be all the magnification one really needs for a carbine.
running it on an EGW extended rail with weaver quad locks , makes for a very good combination as low as I could get it and far enough forward to work for me.

Put a 1 x 4 Leupold on it.

Have a 7600 in 35 Whelen. 2-7x32 redfield on it. Bought it used, good shape but was fouled up, cleaned the crap out of it and shoots great. Make sure your mag is in good, or you’ll be back tracking, don’t ask me how I know that

Same here. They don’t pull much in this area and seeing as how everyone is going the LR direction, they’ve declined heavily with the younger crowd. I’ve had several over the years but find myself not holding onto them for very long. Take them a few miles north into PA and they bring a premium. But here, meh. I like them just fine. My FIL has one in 308 that I’d love to get hold of. But, it’s more nostalgic than anything. I know what his has been through and done. I’d not use it much. Personally, if I’d ever get another, I’d want it in 270, 308 or 243. I’m just not a fan of the 30-06 (he says as he slinks off silently into the corner while others cast stones in his direction).

I think price they bring has a lot to do with how they hunt. if your shooting deer under 125 yards and have a few seconds from first sighting to get the shot off the it is worth more , if you might want a second shot , follow up or to shoot 2 deer withing a second of each other then more value.

if you sit in a box blind and watch the deer for 5 minutes before deciding which ONE to shoot it is probably not your kind of rifle.

not sub moa or tactical , or classic bolt gun , no magnums and no 6.5cm

anyone else have a 222 or 244 in 760??

I knew they made it in the 244, but not the .222. I am thinking from handling this one that I might need to add a few more. I have looked up how to take it down for a good cleaning, but have not yet. Anything that I need to watch for as I do it, its never as simple as it looks.
