I picked up some #2 twist link chain but it's zinc coated, is there anything I can dip it in that will dull the shine.

I was thinkin of muritic acid (sp).

Soak it in straight vinegar for a few days.

If you use acid be sure to neutralize the acid with a dunk in bucket of water / baking soda. Use acid outdoors the fumes can ruin your lungs with one big breath.

yeah I've used muric before and I know about the fumes...never removed zinc with it though. Will it also take off galvanized finish? Thanks.

I am not sure I would think so though.

Get yourself a gal milk jug, cut out the top right below the handle, put in the muric acid leave room for below..

Then get a 1/2 gal plastic milk jug and cut out enough to get your chain in, leave the handle on. cut small holes all over the bottom of the 1/2 gal jug. You can poke holes with an ice pick just enough to get the acid in and let it drain when done

then dip then 1/2 gal jug into the gal jug.

The acid worked ,tried it this morning, it will take off the zinc coating and galvinized finish. I did dip it in baking soda to neutralize.

Thanks

Galvanize and zinc are for all intents and purposes the same thing.
I once used muratic acid, but find I like vinegar better, if for no other reason than with vinegar I don't have to stay with it - I can walk away, tend to other things, and come back to it a couple of days later. It's a better utilization of my time.
Adios,
