I have. I turned a model 10 in 308 into a 6.5 creedmoor and a model 110 in 30-06 into a 25-06. Just wondering if anyone else has done it. I'm really thinking about a 300 PRC. Our deer season runs till the end of January and I have to work a couple more weeks so I'm bored. Gonna trap the entire month of February on the deer lease.

Are you guys buying new barrels? How do you head space, and do you need a special wrench for the barrel nut? the easy way to do it is to buy the kit. they have a standard and magnum small and large thread and a barrel nut , you need a barrel vice which is really a hard wood block drilled the same size as the barrel with resin clamped hard down to the table there is a spanner for the barrel nut and a go and no go gauge in the kit https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1003581243?pid=343533barrel vice https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006552312?pid=226100action wrench https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1006553240?pid=710783you may not need the action wrench for a savage , once the barrel nut is loose they may not be that hard to turn. admittedly I haven't done one , i have looked at doing them several times , the 358win was the kit I was going to do and make it a dedicated cast boolit gun 250gr of lead at 2200 fps I hear the first rule of barrel swaps is don't shoot the host gun before you do the swap , when you have a shooter in 308 that really likes 180gr bullets it is really hard to justify a 358 barrel and tools.

There are two different size lock nuts on the Savage rifles and the wrench that will take care of them will come with many new barrels as a kit. You can also order barrels all contoured, threaded and chamber cut through places like Brownells and Shillen. The only issue is if you want the barrel drilled for iron sights. The beauty of the Savage is that you can adjust headspace with a turn of the barrel and tightening the lock nut. Some kits will also include a chamber gauge (usually a field gauge), IMO these are usually on the lower end of quality. If you decide to change out the barrel on a savage yourself, you may decide to do it again so just buy a wrench for about $30 sometimes less on Ebay as some people buy kits and sell the wrenches when done their project (think I paid $20 for a used one). You can also rent many of the tools including reamers which if you get a short chambered barrel with sights on it you will need and also a set of Go-No Go gauges from several companies, a couple I'll put links to below.Or of course you can check with a local gunsmith and see what they will charge to do the change over for you. If you are not mechanically inclined and plan this to be a one and done project I would suggest using a gunsmith. https://4drentals.com/ offers some good info on which barrel you need and you can rent the gauges for under $10. https://www.reamerrentals.com/ Again a wealth of good info and they rent their gauges for about $7

Yep 7mag on a 116 did away with the bbl jam nut installed a slim line brake, shillen #3 contour. Shot 140-160 sierras in the low fours. Never done the kit swap thing. Fitted the bbl to the action the same as a remchesning set the bbl shoulder for .005 off bolt face Dave Kiff piloted reamer chambered to .0015 over go. Owner says it is the most accurate rifle he’s ever shot. Might have done an oversized bolt lapped in don’t remember.

The WSM is a large shank short action. Start there. I ordered a 300PRC barrel from X-Caliber the other day they were having a 25% off sale. 28" Sendero contour 1/9 5R 8spiral flutes 5/8x24 threaded. I always order gauges from PTG so I have them. So far I have 30-378 Weatherby mag, 25-06 and 6.5 creedmoor. Fixing to have 300 PRC.The 2 I've done so far are real shooters.A lot of guys use a piece of scotch tape on the end of a new case but personally I prefer the gauges.I set the headspace tight so that just before the bolt closes on the case you start to feel a tiny bit of resistance.
