Anybody spray down their sets with Scent Killer after making them? I think that stuff is a useless gimmick for deer hunting but I wonder if it could have some value for trapping, especially with first night catches.

you dont need that to one night coyotes. ( it is liable to put down an odor that repels coyotes) just carry everything you need to your spot. make the set without moving all over the place. gather everything up then stand up and walk back to your truck. don't hurry, pay attention to details. walk in, kneel down. make the set gather everything and leave. its walking around or back and forth to get stuff that causes problems.

I agree with "danny" except I do not walk back the way I came in. I walk past the set and circle on back to the vehicle

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

If scent killer worked that way, then drug cartels would buy it by the cargo ship load.

I agree with what was said above.

I was like the most a non believer in scent killers until I had a coonhound catch a skunk My brother told me to spay everything with scent killer and it works. Now on a k9 set I think it would help but not a cure all But you probably can save some money by buying the unscented fabreeze

The way I look at that spray is this. A dog has 260-300 million scent receptors depending on the breed. We know a dog can be trained to locate a fresh dead guy in 10-15 ft of water with an average current. Some say they can locate things 20-30 feet under ground. A deer has roughly 290 million scent receptors. You can’t tell me that spray bottle will fool them.

I’ve personally tried dead down wind and wildlife research product I’ve sprayed myself down and gone for a long walk and had my wife let my coon dog out of the house. From my experience dead down wind was worth less. And wildlife research may have slowed the dog down but she still found me within a decent time.

My neighbor is a K9 officer with the sheriff's department. According to him, nothing you use will fool his dogs nose. The dog does it for fun and a reward..... the coyote uses his nose to keep his skin.

It does kill scent on objects, but your skin constantly sheds dead skin cells and you have to breathe, so it will not help you fool a deer. So many studies have been done and when it came to dogs finding a hidden person, the guys with the scent sprays were found first. I believe it also leaves a weird odor to animals.

I'm going for charcoal impregnated, woven copper with the electrical field clothing and underwear with the scent mask and gloves. Then the ION locker pump thingy and two different sprays and using nose jammer and an OZONICS with baseball cap mount. Oh almost forgot rubber boots from a rubber plant tree recommended by that ant with scent free gators.

I set traps straight from a construction job with diesel on my clothes and hands smelling like epoxy and got first night catches. Diesel is a good cover scent?
Like bctomcat I walk on past and out another place, turning around indicates the end of the trail and doubles up the scent on the in path.

All joking aside I'm not totally sold on the whole scent free thing. Most of the places I set have atv, utv, vehicle and tractor traffic. I try to avoid unnatural stuff like gasoline or strong scents that don't belong like chemicals but mainly I just wear different gloves for setting and baiting and I do wear rubber boots but have worn my work shoes. I also don't pee or spit at my set location and I try to control sweat.

I don't buy gas in my truck with my stuff in back. I sure don't drag a dead chicken with me when I go to set though. Clean tools, dyed and waxed traps a must. Lure, bait and urine kept in separate containers away from each other. Neoprene gloves for the smelly stuff, plenty pairs of white jerseys for traps and tools. Don't get any odors on steel or you'll be sorry. After any catch, even coyote, I pull trap, walk 10 or 15 ft and make two clean sets. Favorite books: Mark June, coyote trapping and Bud Boda, land trappers trouble shooting guide or something like that.

gasoline and diesel are just as much a part of a coyotes world as rabbit meat, those smells are everywhere they go and often lead to a dead pile or other food, coyotes are not afraid of fuel smells. The only animal you fool with clean gloves is the trapper. If you set 3-5 traps at each location you will already have a clean trap set made ten feet from the catch circle, remake right there with that trap and go find more locations to gang set. Every second or minute spent dithering around being clean and pretending to be scent free is time wasted that you could spend skinning.
Make your bait or lure be the cover scent let it be all the animal can think about.

i wear deer skin gloves when i dirt trap. they protect my hands from stickers and keeps them from getting the skin wore off so easy. i stick them in my coat pocket when i grab the bait jar and pee bottle. just bare hand that stuff. after a couple weeks i toss them in the washer. cold water no soap. air dry. have to put them on and stretch them a bit as they dry or they shrink a bunch and its more work to stretch them back out and loosen them up. i dont worry about trap setters or hammer or my sifter at remakes. I imagine after an hour or two of setting those gloves reek to a coyotes nose anyway.

there is a 400 acre farm not far from where i live . it is a hot spot of a coyote travel way. until two days ago my record coyote catch off that single property was 22 in a season. I been trapping there about a month this year. catch has dropped way off but i can check it in a few minutes and its a mile and a half from my front door. tuesday i caught #23 for the year off that 400 acres. i dont know which one's were named military phonetic radio code letters either.

i dye and wax my traps too. i like the way it protects them from rust. i dont often take time to redo them during trapping season. i will take them to the car wash though and pressure wash them on the rinse cycle when im moving stuff to a new area. i like a clean trap at a new location.

It seems that many guys use jersey gloves for setting. I would think that jersey gloves hold scent much better than neoprene. I am just looking for opinions on that because I do not know what I am doing wrong in trying to catch canines. I have been trapping again for the last five years (after retiring) and I always wear neoprene thinking that it picks up and holds less scent. I use a plastic bucket, with everything that is scent free (traps, digging tools, etc.) on the inside and my lures and baits hanging on the outside. I do not handle any of the baits or lures with the gloves. I clip my gloves on the inside of the bucket when not using them. I have a lot of traps dug up and cannot figure out why. I spend a good bit of time bedding them solid so I am not sure if it is a scent thing or not. I boil and wax with straight paraffin wax that I buy from a candle maker place. They assured me that the wax is scent free. I know that I am not much of a trapper and it can get frustrating but I have a great time doing it.

I never have posted on here before but enjoy all of the comments by those of you that do. Thanks for taking your time to do that.

God Bless and have a very Merry Christmas.
