Bridger 1.65 with #2 music wire springs and Duke 550 could replace them.

Tried every trap. Hard to beat Jakes. No reason to modify. Made from an American Trapper who came from a time when American's took pride, in building the best in the world.
Wish, I would have only bought Jakes and don't count out his lures.

Now I see that duke is coming out with a pro 650 size trap in march. They sure look good! Guess I will be buying more traps I don't need! Same here!

I was going to read up on the Duke 650 post, but I see it is gone now. Does anyone know what happened to it?

A choice of predator trap usually means identifying what you want to catch and what you don't want to hold on to. I use the MB 550 2 coil OS because it works when I need it on dogs and cats but most species with hooves can pull out. I let a antelope loose yesterday from a MB 650 that another trapper has set here in this area and those are the setups that'll get you in trouble with land owners if you're not careful. We've all had them, but I don't want a phone call letting me know I've caught someone's "pet" or stock animal and that they're not happy about it. Real life results can steer you in a good direction should you choose to observe.

I guess Duke is going to be offering a 650 in the pro series too but the 550 fits our northern size restrictions.

I haven’t used allot of different traps, however I now trap with only jakes for coyotes. Learned about the traps from a very well known local guy. He liked them for several reasons 1 being, way easier to dig a square bed then a round bed. 2nd thing is they have big power for breaking up out of the mud and or ice. Hear in NY that changes by the hour. I personally like them for those reasons too. However I’ve come to love those rubber pads because I always have my dog with me and he has gotten tangled up a couple times. Now he’s gotten smarter it doesn’t happen. I know of a couple people who let there dogs run and I warn them every year.... but I have caught there dog a couple times. That also makes me love these traps. I have tried 1.75 for coyotes and they hold them without a doubt. They are round and that thin steel jaw will cut a dancing coyote. I like the big meaty rubber padded jaw. Also I plan on trapping for a very long long time. It’s what I love and there for I’m willing to pay a few extra bucks for a really quality small business trap. Butbutbut, robert the waddell says they suck and wont fire thru frozen ground, because they are not round. Buying a jake is like buying a weatherby rifle, youll have it for life. butbutbut.......... get yer jakes. They wont sell em forever.

I use nothing but Jakes. I use them for coyote, fox, and raccoon. (I usually need to catch all 3 species for nuisance control.) I do have to run a lighter tension on the pan to be able to catch any of the 3 in a given set. I set for a front foot catch for coyote, but catch a lot of the the fox and raccoon by the back foot in those sets. I use nothing but Jakes. I use them for coyote, fox, and raccoon. I see you mentioned fox. I would guess you have a lot of grey fox in your next of the woods? I am not familiar in the least with the fine Jake trap. I have looked at them and that is it. I am surprised to hear you use them on fox. Good to know. Do you have trouble with grey fox at all due to the size and weight of the trap? Am a bit surprised you like them on raccoon. Not question you one bit but there is a lot of room in that trap. Thank you in advance for not hollering at me for the dumb questions. mac

Great questions, Mac. I do a lot of predator control work for the protection of ground nesting birds. The biggest threat has been coyotes. Given that, I want to target them first and foremost. At the same time, I do not want to miss any opportunity to catch red fox and raccoons in these sets. (I don't run into many gray fox where I am doing this work.) I will say that Jakes would not be my first choice for raccoons, but they work just fine, and I have not had any issues with the large gap under the jaws due to their large size. The raccoons are sound asleep when I get there just like when they are held by #11 double long springs. I believe that the rubber jaws have something to do with that.

For here in DE a 1.5 coil is plenty IMO... no, or very, very few coyotes. Chain setup is 2 links of #2 chain, a MTP crunch proof, 2 more links, and either another swivel (for bullet stakes) or a lap link( for rebar stakes).Doesn't matter if they are Dukes, Victors, or Bridgers… all are laminated and/or offset. Springs on the Victors and Bridger's are replaced when needed w/ music wire, seems the Dukes never get weak. I also have a few doz. round jaw Montgomery's and Montana's but for me they are just too strong, and the dogs bend terribly on some of them. I ground an OS into the jaws and smoothed the edges of them w/ a file.
