Walmart said Tuesday it will discontinue sales of some ammunition in stores across the United States in response to the mass shootings in Texas last month that killed several people.

The largest U.S. arms retailer also said it will discontinue handgun sales in Alaska, the only state where it sells them.

Walmart will stop selling short-barrel rifle ammunition such as the .223 caliber and 5.56 caliber, after clearing current stock. While this type of ammunition is commonly used in some hunting rifles, it is also used in large-capacity clips on military-style weapons, the company said.

Sales of handgun ammunition also will be discontinued, it said.
The retailer, which has been under pressure to change its policies on gun sales, said it took the action following the death of 31 people in mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, one of which took place in a Walmart store.
Just last month, Walmart asked employees at its U.S. stores to take down signs and playable demos of violent video games, but made no changes to its policy on selling firearms.

"As a company, we experienced two horrific events in one week, and we will never be the same," Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said in a letter to Walmart's associates.

The retailer, however, said it would continue to cater to hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts, selling long barrel deer rifles and shotguns.

The company added that its latest actions would reduce its market share of ammunition from around 20% to a range of about 6% to 9%.

"We believe it will likely drift toward the lower end of that range, over time, given the combination of these changes," McMillon said.

Well, that'll show them! It will be a nice bump for local gun shops and other outdoor stores.

Do SBRs take different ammo than "long barrel" hunting guns? Last I checked, SBR is under 16" which most dont have.

I'll give them this. They are ASKING people to refrain from openly carrying in their stores. Concealed is fine. There appears to be no plan to make their stores "gun free" zones.

Walmart is also discontinuing the sale of handguns in Alaska.

Another well needed boost to smaller local retailers

I think I heard Walmart sold 60% of total ammo sold int he US at one point and they are going to stop selling 90% of the ammunition they stock.

wow talk about scrapping market share.

because they require finger printing , a 200 dollar tax stamp , LEO sign off depending on how you acquire , and weeks to months of waiting.

so they don't get used in crimes hardly ever.

some select ammo is manufacturered using a faster burning powder to get the most velocity out if the short barrel ,but not that common.

they are probably just misusing the terms and mean MSR ammo like American Eagle XM193 MSR bulk pack 5.56

Yeah, seems like a well thought out business decision.

Well as I am not one to support gun control in any form. This morning was the last time I shopped at Walmart ...... Probably have to do a little scouting anyway when we get to TN as to where to shop for groceries etc. For myself Walmart has joined the ranks of Dicks and the other ilk.

Let's go Brandon

I've bought .22 and shotgun shells in the past, but has been quite some time. Did buy smaller items like camo, hooks, crappie jigs, etc. from them. As of today, not no more.

Mr. Walton would never have agreed. I’m going to quit Walmart unless an emergency.

After a bit of thought, it concerns me that some corporate CEO and his/her beliefs appear to be moulding society in one direction or another. Something you did not see when the majority of business was family owned. They appreciated any market share they could get. I do believe, folks need to wake up if they wish to have any freedom in the near future.

I can do without Walmart, cheap skeet shells are all I ever bought there. Gun shows can get more business.

you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

Just heard on the news that Kroger will also ask their customers to not open carry in their stores.

I assure you some corporate CEO did not make this decision alone. Their board was probably evolved. They answer to stock holders, want profits. Corporations the size of WalMart do not make casual decisions. Every foot of aisle space has to generate a profit margin.
