I don't agree with the political parties they support and made my stand very clear as a union man.
Unions have done well for the Northern Ontario workers,provided us will good negotiated contracts and decent pensions and benefits.
Unions have also saved companies that were being closed by fat cat greedy big corporations,by buying out the mills etc and keeping them open.
Spruce falls in Kap is but one good example.It was bought out by the workers(unions)when the fat greedys said it was unprofitable.In a few years it was so profitable it was sold back to a private company at a huge profit,and dividends paid to the workers after the sale.It was all lies by the greedy fat cats who said it was unprofitable,the workers knew it and proved it.,
Years ago the companys were very good to the towns(employees) they operated in-supplying workers and materials to build water treatment facilities and hockey rinks etc.
Even recently our railroad unions worked with management to restructure companys to keep them viable,and not put them out of business.Sacrifices were made on both sides to keep people working in good jobs,and the company viable.
Unions here are not bad guys.

I have many retired friends who were anti union all their life
They now live with NO pension and cant understand why I get it????

A law was just passed to bail out Michigan Teamsters pension fund by the taxpayers. All pensions are ponsi schemes and unsustainable and should be abolished.

Union workers are a minority of the workers in this country. As such they they should be given the same government protections as women and people of color.

I remember having to eat peanut butter and pinto beans for three weeks while my dad was not allowed on the jobsite because of a union strike. They lost the family van because they couldn't pay the monthly payment. Never worked for a union, never will.

Unions where established to help the labor force to have a voice. Now I am not so sure. I belonged to a union. Was a Union Stewart as well. When a promotion came available for me within the company. That same union and employees that I fought for. Threw me under the bus. We ended up getting a state mediator in to settle the dispute. I won the employees lost. The union rep tried to amend things with me. I told him he could kiss you know what. Most employers are fair. They have to be. There are a lot of federal state and local laws governing employers. Never was that way when unions formed. I believe unions where responsible for the work place we have today. But. Now I believe they are just a forced payment called dues.

Budgeting and saving money is a personal responsibility. Can't blame the employer or union for that.

How can you budget for something when you are prevented from going to work for 3 weeks?

Unions have there place, now today they have become somewhat outdated. Go back and stuck the steal, oil, rail, etc. industries and working conditions, deaths, pay etc. My father was a severe asthmatic and couldn't get a day off to go the hospital at doctors orders, or be fired. Unions worked for a livable wage, sick leave, vacation time, etc. Again today times have changed but unions do have their place.

Yes SS is a ponsi scheme, HOWEVER I could not opt out and no matter where I worked I paid in.

Working union is like making a deal with the devil. Make better money but sell your soul to the leftist/communist devil. Now the union bosses don't mind that this is happening. They're making a mint off the backs of union workers.

Sounds good until life happens. My dad broke his back, was told he would never walk again, but after two years of doing his own physical therapy, he was able to go back to work. After a year back at work being immense pain every day, he was just starting to get back on his feet financially, when the union went on strike. Really took the wind out of his sails. If you've never spent all you have and was nothing bettered by seeing physicians, praise God. If you have, you'll understand a little better trying to get back on your feet.

Sorry for your dad's misfortune. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Best of luck to you and your family.

--Among states, Hawaii and New York had the highest union membership

Union is another name for Big Corporation...$$$. And the sheep pay in and follow the rams orders, no matter what it is. Always found it strange the local Union president always got every holiday off even if he couldn’t pick it with his allotted vacation. Seems the unions always have “Union business” that needs attended to during the holidays.
Unions may have had there place and probably were a big help in getting workers laws to what they are today, but today’s unions are the same as the companies now, those at the top are making a mint!
