I don't know what kind of apples you used but my gramma made it. Musta ate 40-50 gallons growing up. I don't even know what her recipe was. Wish I did.

Around here we use alot of different apples for Apple butter, and some people like to mix it up for their batch. McIntosh, Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, not sure if there's a right or wrong

I use Jonathans and Honey Crisp, just because those are the trees I had. Makes really good applebutter. No fruit trees the new place yet, hoping to plant a new orchard in the Spring.

We have made it with McIntosh and with Golden Delicious because they were the trees we had. It came out much better with the McIntosh, more acid and more flavor. The batches from the GD were quite bland and more like applesauce.

I've never made it myself but Ma and Grand Ma made if from apples that grew on tree in our yard. I don't know apples but was told they were Mclntosh that Grampa had planted??? Not sure other than Cinnamon what they put in that stuff..ate a lot of it when was kid.
I think most old timers made it with what ever they had for apples growing close. My mother inlaw always got mix batch drops from her uncle that had dozen trees. She made her pies and stuff with them and all was good.
