I've always struggled with this technique of beaver trapping with only limited success and many knocked down snares.
I've looked at several commercial made snares for under ice, as well as read threads, and seen youtube videos on them. Everyone seems to have a differing opinion on what they like. There are cable sizes/twists and locks of every combination.
I would think a stiff slow snare would be better than a fast one.
So what's your personal best performing snare?

If your having trouble with knocked down snares, leave a one inch tag end on the cable at the tie off ferrel to tuck the lock under. You need an adams lock for this trick. 7x7 1/16 closes tight and you will get more extremity catches. You can also use 1x19 1/16th cable.
Or you can use the old style beaver wire which requires no lock, and re sets itself if bumped.
Regardless,Always check the hole with your feed hook and remove any obstructions where you are setting your snarepole.
Also knick your baitsticks only where the snares are.

The under ice snare I used with good success was a 10 inch loop of 1X19 cable in 1X16th size with an adams lock and a pigtail wire for attaching to your pole. With the pigtail wire you can angle your snare lock up to reduce knock downs.

Sounds like 1/16th is the prefered size. Is there a disadvantage to using a large cable size?
What's the advantage of the Adam's lock vs. slim lock or a micro lock?

Proper size Adams lock hole fits the cable closely.Locks up tight.
No need for large cable. Many under ice snaremen prefer 3/64.
I use 1\16 cause that's what I use for cats and fox.
3/32 is wolf cable.
